2011 Christian Book Publishers

The publishing industry is changing so rapidly that I’m going to be adding a lot to this page this year. Right now in mid-May I’m updating the traditional publishers. Later, I’ll be adding a section on reputable Print on Demand (POD) houses and will post some authors’s experiences with them. Now for my 13th Annual Christian Book Publishers Update!

Traditional Publishers

You’ll notice that I have 3 categories, the Main houses, Newer and Smaller and Ebook houses, and African-American publishing.

Abingdon Press

201 Eighth Avenue South

P.O. Box 801

Nashville, TN 37202-0801

RamonaRamona Richards, Sr. Acquisitions Editor-Fiction

http://www.AbingdonPress.com

Abingdon prefers agented submissions or meeting someone at a writing conference. They are open to the right book to add to Fall of 2012, but are primarily focusing on 2013 and beyond. It’s suggested that you read a few of their novels to discover how they differ from other Christian publishers. “Conversion” scenes are not necessary; rather they would prefer to explore the length and depth of Christian experience. Types of genres sought include contemporary and historical romance; contemporary women; romantic suspense, mysteries, and thrillers; romantic comedy; African-American; Amish and/or Old Order Mennonite, and Christmas novellas. Strong female protagonists preferred. No interest at this time in speculative fiction.

LIVE LIFE INSPIRED

A division of HarperCollinsPublishers

Sue Brower
Executive Editor, Fiction

Jacque Alberta

Acquisitions Editor, Young Adult Fiction and Nonfiction
Zondervan’s Mission is to be the leading Christian communications company meeting the needs of people with resources that glorify Jesus Christ and promote biblical principles. Our fiction program strives to do this through quality writing and compelling stories.

Zondervan publishes primarily to the core Christian reader in the Contemporary, Suspense, Historical and Romance categories. We have a well-balanced list at this time, so are not looking for any particular genre—just exceptional writing, characterization, and creativity.

For young adult (YA) fiction and nonfiction, however, we are actively acquiring. For fiction, we are looking for paranormal, humorous, coming-of-age, literary, and books that will appeal across genders, as well as books that appeal specifically to male teen readers. Historical fiction with a compelling hook may also be considered. We are open to standalone fiction but we are also looking for series, or for books with series potential. For fiction, the story and/or characters should be the main driver, with the faith elements woven in naturally.

In the YA nonfiction realm, we are looking for titles that will appeal directly to teens, such as devotionals, books on teen topics, or books written by teens for teens. Exceptional writing, characterization, and creativity are also desired for all YA proposals.

Length ranges from 75K-105K words for adult, 65K–105K for YA, 40K–65K for juvenile/middle grade

Zondervan has very few slots for new novelists and one of the best opportunities to meet with us is at the ACFW writer’s conference.

Zondervan does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. We will consider those proposals that come to us directly from agents or from writer’s conferences when requested. Our manuscript submission guidelines are on our website www.zondervan.com.

Marcher Lord Press is a small, indie publishing company founded by Christian publishing industry veteran Jeff Gerke (a.k.a. Jefferson Scott). Marcher Lord Press specializes in Christian speculative fiction: fantasy, science fiction, time travel, supernatural thrillers, and other “weird” Christian fiction. These are full-length novels for adults (no YA) and are regular printed-and-bound novels like the ones on the shelf in your bookstore, though these novels are available through the Internet only. Marcher Lord Press is not a subsidy, vanity, or self-publishing press. It is an advance-paying,  royalty-paying publisher that publishes less than 1% of the proposals submitted to it. Marcher Lord Press releases 6 novels a year, in April and October.

Excellent. Evocative. Eclectic. We want only the highest quality manuscripts from all quarters: Christian, crossover, general market. If Christian, it must be better than good, and extremely non-preachy. We are on a mission to produce award-winning fiction, nonfiction, and poetry—looking for ultra-creative, new, fresh, different in most all genres. Especially interested in general market cross-genre works. Experimental material is more than welcome as is speculative fiction and “weird fiction.”

No-no’s: explicit sexuality, gratuitous bad language out of keeping with the character and/or situation, gratuitous excessive violence.  Visit our website for in-depth guidelines or contact the publisher at pypliaison@portyonderpress.com. We’re family-friendly but we also realize mature adults are part of that “family.”

Urban Christian

publishing life changing stories that reflect today’s struggles and challenges of living, love and romance, without losing sight of God

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Urban Christian is currently only accepting agented submissions.  If you’ve submitted an unagented, unsolicited manuscript, please resubmit with agent representation.

Urban Books presents its new Christian Fiction imprint, Urban Christian. Urban Books is an African American publishing company that has a distribution deal with a major publishing house, Kensington Publishing Corporation. Through this divine journey of moving stories, Urban Christian is the voice that will take the Urban Books readers to another level; the spiritual side of the craft.

URBAN CHRISTIAN Writing Guidelines:

Genre: Christian/Inspirational fiction
Fiction Manuscript word length: Range of approximately 65,000 – 85,000 words
Manuscript pages: Range of approximately 260-300 pages

The Urban Christian imprint publishes works of fiction that consist of predominately African-American characters and portray life-changing, dramatic, redeeming tales highlighting life, love and intrigue in the Christian community. Storylines must be entertaining yet inspiring, and the characters must ultimately work to resolve issues, difficulties and challenges through faith in God and/or the power of prayer. Titles produced by Urban Christian have mass appeal because they tell stories that reflect today’s challenges and triumphs through realistic characters and situations to which readers can relate. Though stories are not preachy in nature, the spiritual “feel” and redeeming message is never lost throughout. Urban Christian novels will not feature any profanity, graphic sex scenes or explicit sexual innuendos, including but not limited to the naming or describing of male and female genitalia.

If you have a manuscript that falls under this specific genre (no poetry, memoirs or non-fiction, please) and are interested in Urban Christian reviewing it for consideration of publication, please adhere to the following submission guidelines:

1) Please submit a one-page synopsis of the novel and the first four chapters only of your manuscript. Submissions should by typed (no handwritten submissions) and double-spaced using a size 12 font and one inch margins. Each page should be numbered and contain the author’s name as well as the title. Do not email submissions.

2) The cover page should contain the author’s name, address, phone number, email address and the title of the submission.

3) Please include a self-addressed postage paid envelope of which the full submission may be returned to you in if need be, otherwise, submissions Urban Christian does not wish to consider for publication will be destroyed.

4) Please allow three to six months from the date of submission to be informed whether or not we wish to review and consider the full manuscript. If interested, the full manuscript will be requested. The full manuscript should not be submitted in its entirety unless requested. If your manuscript is selected for publication, you will be required to send the entire manuscript via hard copy as well as email.

5) Mail submissions to the following: ATTN: Urban Christian Submissions, P.O. Box 128, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068.

Please do not make query phone calls or emails regarding the status of your submission. That is why it is important that you enclose a self-addressed postage paid envelope so that we may notify you of our decision.
