The American Revolution is finally over, and Sophie Menzies is starved for good news. When her nearest neighbor, General Seamus Ogilvy, finally comes home to Tall Acre, she hopes it is a sign of better days to come. But the general is now a widower with a small daughter in desperate need of a mother. Nearly destitute, Sophie agrees to marry Seamus and become the mistress of Tall Acre in what seems a safe, sensible arrangement. But when a woman from the general's past returns without warning, the ties that bind this fledgling family together will be strained to the utmost. When all is said and done, who will be the rightful mistress of Tall Acre?
Triumph and tragedy, loyalty and betrayal--readers find it all in the rich pages of this newest historical novel from the talented pen of Laura Frantz. Her careful historical details immerse the reader in the story world, and her emotional writing and finely tuned characters never cease to enchant fans both old and new.
My Review:
The Mistress of Tall Acre isn’t my favorite by Laura Frantz. I felt as though when she wrote this one she may have lacked inspiration. There was just something…lacking. The characters in this book weren’t as memorable as the characters from any of her others. They were strong characters, as hers always are. They just weren’t…distinguishable. They didn’t stand out to me as her characters always do. I liked this book. But I didn’t love it. I don’t want to read it again, as I usually do at the end of her other novels.
I will say that I really appreciate the historical aspect of The Mistress of Tall Acre. I know it must have taken hours upon hours of research for her to complete this novel. It is incredible to note just how much time it must have taken. Laura Frantz also added just a hint of mystery to this book. It’s not her usual style to do that, but it was well done. Because it was her, I was only half expecting what the end of the mystery would be. How she carried out the story was very well done, though.
Though this was a nice read, it wasn’t a great one. I hope that the author feels more inspired for her next book.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
