Athens, WI-Place Where Time Stood Still is three stories: Athens, a small village in Wisconsin in the 1930s, my father and the management of his business, my mother's story, my brothers and sister, the only Jewish family in town and a boy, growing up in that magical time and place. Mostly, we were the same as our friends, but there were some who never let us forget that we were different.

This was a joyful return to a time now gone and an area of nostalgic recollections with vivid detail. My memory was jogged by the the happenings of small town rural America, albeit a Midwestern setting. My frame of reference and relating is Eastern, yet i found myself smiling throughout my read. It was lightening, meaning it lifted me. This memoir portrayed a time worth remembering. Clearly Ed Semon was able to convey his coming of age years, the everyday life of a small town in which community, interwoven human relationships and the predictable weekend and annual events which the community shared in common provided a cohesiveness and excitement for the young and the old. This is story-telling at its tender best. I experienced a sense of the meaning of the sacred amid the ordinariness of the people and daily events. i also appreciated being taken inside the life and challenge of being a single Jewish family within a Gentile community. This is a memoir for the generations.

I have been to Athens to visit friends several times. It's great to hear about how it was in the past from another friend of mine who grew up there.

Ed has filled this book with memories of his childhood, so vivid and precise, such detail and insights. It made me think of my childhood, and I realize that I have forgotten more than I remember! Records of small towns of time long gone are very important to the people of today, to help them understand their roots, and how life was back then. No TV, Play stations, or I-phones back then ........... just good old fashioned fun, where kids needed to use their imagination. A very interesting read, even though I have never lived in America. Small towns are the same the world over. Well done Ed.

The book is misnamed. It is not so much about the town of Athens where my parents grew up and lived until I was a year old as it is a memoir about the author's growing up in the only Jewish family in Athens, I think that the title should reflect that it is a memoir. Also, I know Athens very well, and it is full of incorrect data. I think that he should have consulted with long-time residents to get the facts straight. As a memoir, however, it reflects well on his feelings about growing up in this small town. Even so, it is important, when publishing a book for general consumption that all of the facts be accurate.

Book was poorly written, repetitive, and rambling. I would not recommend it at all and it needs a good layout person and editor.

Being from Athens Wisconsin I find the book interesting. There is many things mentioned that my loved ones or family members have experienced because they lived there during that time.

I absolutely love this book. The writing is superb and it really captured my imagination. I was sad that it had to come to an end. I really felt like I entered this very special world with Ed Semon and his family. People who enjoy reading about this era, about small town Wisconsin and Jewish issues will love it. A unique and special gem of a book.
