A New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller!

In this riveting saga of temptation, grace, and unconditional love, the
New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love and The Masterpiece delivers big-canvas storytelling at its very best.

To those who matter in 1950s Hollywood, Lena Scott is the hottest rising star to hit the silver screen since Marilyn Monroe. Few know her real name is Abra. Even fewer know the price she’s paid to finally feel like she’s somebody.

To Pastor Ezekiel Freeman, Abra will always be the little girl who stole his heart the night he found her, a wailing newborn abandoned under a bridge on the outskirts of Haven. Zeke and his son, Joshua―Abra’s closest friend―watch her grow into an exotic beauty. But Zeke knows the circumstances surrounding her birth have etched scars deep in her heart, scars that leave her vulnerable to a fast-talking charmer who lures her to Tinseltown.

Hollywood feels like a million miles from Haven, and naive Abra quickly learns what’s expected of an ambitious girl with stars in her eyes. But fame comes at a devastating price. She has burned every bridge to get exactly what she thought she wanted. Now all she wants is a way back home.

“One of the edgiest Christian romances I have had the pleasure of reading in a long while. Francine Rivers has woven a deeply moving story with an adept hand that knows just how to layer humanity, in all its beautiful and ugly truth, into almost every individual who steps onto the page.”
USA Today’s Happy Ever After Blog

“This is another compelling and moving story by one of the genre’s most honored and talented writers.”
Library Journal, starred review

“Rivers returns with a page-turning recasting of the story of the prodigal son, here a prodigal daughter. . . . This story arc will be particularly resonant for Christian readers, but Rivers has the writing ability to reel in others who enjoy a well-told tale of redemption.”

From Booklist

In Rivers’ (Her Daughter’s Dream, 2010) latest inspirational tale, Pastor Zeke feels compelled to walk to the bridge at the edge of Haven, his small Northern California town. There he discovers an abandoned newborn infant. The year is 1936 and his wife, Maryanne, her heart weakened by rheumatic fever in her childhood and advised against another pregnancy, wants to keep the child. They name her Abra. Five years later, Maryanne dies and Pastor Zeke gives Abra up for adoption to friends. Abra ends up feeling rejected by her birth mom and the pastor, and never bonds with her adoptive family. Joshua, her best friend, goes to war in Korea with a MASH unit, and she runs away to Hollywood and becomes a starlet under the tutelage of an agent who sees her as his Galatea. Hollywood success fails to make Abra feel whole and wanted, and she has no idea that Joshua is looking for her. Rivers’ persistent Christian message will please readers who are seeking fiction with a repeated and strong message about redemption and salvation. --Diana Tixier Herald

Review

Rivers (Redeeming Love) returns with a page-turning recasting of the story of the prodigal son, here a prodigal daughter. In 1936, Abra Matthews is found as a newborn under a bridge in the small California town of Haven by Pastor Ezekiel Freeman. She’s taken in, but never feels as if she quite belongs, so she is susceptible to a beguiling young man who years later lures 17-year-old Abra to Hollywood. There, she becomes starlet Lena Scott, made over by a Pygmalion-like agent who wants everything from her, even while Abra/Lena comes to understand the cost of what she thought she wanted. Rivers nicely evokes 1950s Hollywood, with its gossip columnists, high-wattage movie stars, and ladder-climbing aspirants; Elvis Presley and Lana Turner put in cameos. This story arc will be particularly resonant for Christian readers, but Rivers has the writing ability to reel in others who enjoy a well-told tale of redemption. Publishers Weekly

In Rivers’ exquisite style, she takes the Biblical story of Ezekiel 16 and translates it into a character-driven tale set in the ’30s through the ’60s. Relating the experiences of the characters to the reader’s relationship with God takes the story to the next level. Richly detailed, at times disturbing, but completely real and dynamic, this is a book to savor.
Romantic Times

Francine Rivers is perhaps the best novelist of our time. In
Bridge to Haven, she quickly captured me with her characters and pulled me into the story of this prodigal daughter. It’s a story you can’t forget. I predict it will become a blockbuster like Redeeming Love. Novel Rocket and I give it our highest recommendation. It’s a 5-star must read. Bridge to Haven has been added to my Top Ten for 2014 and My All Time Favorites List. Novel Rocket

This is a book you won’t want to miss and won’t soon forget. It’s one that will make you think; give you courage and hope, for no matter what you face. I highly recommend it.

This book made me feel many different emotions. I felt intense anger at Pastor Zeke for giving Abra away. I see some reviewers stopped reading after that. I wish they hadn't. It is all explained in the end. Some reviewers felt that Abra took all blame. No she did not. When she went to finally comfront Zeke, he owns his part. I got frustrated with Abra at times. But I remembered my own self destructive behaviour due to hurt also caused by being 'given away', and I realised that my frustration was because I was looking at her choices through the eyes of an adult, not a wounded child. Others would do well to remember that too. I was mad her for not fighting back when she was taken for the abortion, but she did a good job beating herself up for that decision. Not to mention what happened afterwards to cause even more guilt in her heart. Some were freaked out by her and Joshua. They may have been foster siblings for a very short while, but ultimately they were nothing more than friends. They were NOT blood related so I didn't have issue with that. After all, it was only a short awhile ago, relatively speaking, that 1st cousins were still getting married to each other. Perspective. I love Francine Rivers's books and have always found them to be sound Christian fiction. So I was mortified to read one review that said the story contained explicit sex! I avoid books with sex scenes but I couldn't fathom it as I've read so many of this authors books! I had to give her the benefit of the doubt. I'm so glad I did. WHAT A LIE! The scene in question is on the wedding night. Joshua is super sensitive to the fact that she has suffered a lot of abuse. The scene is NOT sensual or sexually decriptive but a picture of loving care towards one another, putting your spouse before yourself. It is imo, a beautiful picture of the union God intended. To make it into something as ugly as explicit sex that is cheap and common and freely available in most books - that is unfair and not true. It is nothing like that! I'm truly glad I gave Ms Rivers the benefit of the doubt. Im also glad i persevered through my anger, frustration and tears because in the end, it was an amazing story of God's forgiveness. One I'm well acquainted with. My only gripe was the ending with Susan. That was a bit anticlimatic. I had already figured things out long before it came to light but the ending made me want to go with 4 stars. In the end the quality of writing demanded 5 stars. I hope you give this book a chance and see for yourself how wonderful God's love and forgiveness is.

Francine Rivers is one of my absolute favorite Christian fiction authors. Her books are just perfection. Any time I start one of her stories, everything in my life goes on the back burner. I find it nearly impossible to put her books down once I've picked them up. And Bridge to Haven was no exception. This book was one worth ignoring my family to read...and read...and read.

I was drawn into the story from the very first page. Baby Abra is born under a bridge in the town of Haven, left by her mother, and discovered by the small town's pastor. Pastor Zeke and his wife take the baby in and name her Abra. Because of the circumstances surrounding her birth, and those regarding her adoptive mother, Abra has always felt unloved and unwanted. She grows up resentful and eager to leave Haven. And she leaves the town at the first opportunity---hand in hand with a dangerous young man bent on using her for his own gain.

Abra's sad story reminded me a lot of Angel's in Francine Rivers' earlier work, Redeeming Love. Of course the circumstances are different, but there were some similarities between the two women, and this was a good thing. Reading Bridge to Haven made me want to read Redeeming Love again (for the, oh, fifth time?).

Bridge to Haven is a long book, and could have easily slowed down during parts. But, Rivers' pacing is perfection and the story moved at a pace that made it very difficult for me to put the book down. Abra's story is so tender and heartfelt. I found myself tearing up more than once as I read. Her journey to faith was so meaningful and emotional. I loved the relationships as well----Rivers excels at developing characters and the characters in Bridge to Haven are what made the book so special.

Bridge to Haven is Francine Rivers at her best. I loved everything about this book, and can't wait for her next release!
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022
As a fan of Redeeming Love, I couldn’t wait to dive into—or off of—Bridge to Haven: A Novel. Getting lost in an inspiring story is not Ms. Rivers’ primary or only goal—although the reader will. Her goal is to lead us, with her characters on a journey of worth and hope.

The inciting incident for Bridge to Haven introduces us to Abra’s nearly tragic beginning. Abandoned as a newborn, under the bridge to Haven, she is miraculously found by the local pastor Zeke,
Abra’s life goes from desperate to one of love and acceptance, until another heartbreak turns Abra’s heart away from God and those who truly love her—the pastor, young Joshua, and a family who adopts her.

But the wounds of rejection are too deep for Abra to see and lure her on a brutal search for what she believes is love and value. A search that takes her to all the wrong places.

This is a story that asserts God’s unending grace and love—that no matter what we’ve done, He still loves us. He is always calling us to cross that bridge back to Him!

Francine is an authentic and elegantly transparent writer. She’s not afraid to depict the real struggles of those searching for truth and love from sources other than our heavenly Father. Which means, there will be scenes and events that are uncomfortable and not for young readers.

The only reason I didn’t give this a 5-Star rating is because I couldn’t recommend this book to a naïve reader. It’s not about age, it’s about life experiences. For those who have experienced the disturbing results of wrong decisions, this book is tame, and hopeful. It is also hopeful for those who left their own “Haven” and don’t know how or if they can return.

No doubt, Francine Rivers is a storyteller who is unafraid to tackle the real and difficult challenges in this world. Thank you, Ms. Rivers. We need you and your beautifully told stories.

Love Francine Rivers books. She always put in interesting historical things too, not only the story itself but back in that timezoon. And it makes it come so much more alive. And also how she helps you see God and His people in different perspectives, helps you have more faith and hope for future that all things are possible with God. I dont want to share too much about this book, but its a really adventurous, heartbreaking from time but most hope filled book. Highly recommend!

This is an excellent Story of how we sometimes get rumbled in the too many activities of this life, while Jesus is always reaching out to us to come and cast our burdens on Him, for HE cares for us. The different characters displayed shows how imperfect man is and how God loves us past our imperfection. He needs us to TRUST Him always to take us through Life to our eternal destination - To be with Him forever.
