4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 279 ratings

STARTING OVER After serving six years in prison for the false charge of manslaughter in the death of his wife, Kurt Jansen must overcome a world of bitterness if he wants to start a new life. But his first priority is securing a restoration job to pay a private investigator to find the real killer and a lawyer to get his kids back.

Hiring a convicted wife-killer isn't what kind-hearted Molly Finnerty bargains for as part of the prison ministry she supports. However, she begins to believe Kurt's claim of innocence and gradually finds a great deal to like about him—perhaps more to like than she should.

Can they overcome the past and find forgiveness and love?

"A Place to Call Home" by Merrillee Whren is much more than your average romance story. As an avid reader of the genre, I would know. I've read hundreds upon hundreds of books in this category. On the surface it fulfills the necessary requirements, but looking at it on a deeper level reveals a story with a much deeper meaning.

After the first few pages, I knew that "A Place to Call Home" would required a different set of eyes. Given what I knew about the author, I decided to set aside my usual thoughts of romance. Gone was what I typically expected, and in its place was a story of inspiration, hope, forgiveness, and dare I say it...intrigue. I am not much for intriguing or mysterious story-lines. However, I found that reading the same format within a style gets old and boring. So, I decided to settle in and begin my journey.

The main characters, Molly and Kurt, work on a renovation project and along the way they have to put their history behind them so that they not only finish the project, but also have a future with one another. They each are starting over which is never easy. Facing their past, each must convince the locals and themselves that what happened long ago has been paid for in more ways than one. While it was difficult for everyone to let go of the hurt, it was clear that faith was the only way it was ever going to happen.

You will feel all of the emotions, from anger to joyful, as Merrillee Whren weaves a believable story of hope and truth in "A Place to Call Home." Hopeful because both Kurt and Molly will find what they are looking for, and truth because it always wins out in the end. Unlike other romance stories, this one did not need the traditional romantic interlude. The love was built while the hero and heroine join forces in order to get the one thing Kurt has been focused on since before he met Molly.

The deeper I got into the story, the harder I found it was to put it down. I suspect that was exactly what Ms. Whren wanted from her readers. Truthfully, I am grateful to the author on so many levels for "A Place to Call Home." The one most profound though is the fact that forgiveness, no matter what the reason for it, is always possible. After the year I have had, it was truly a blessing to be reminded of this.

The book was very well written. I like that it taught me to pray regularly about everything to God, as I should. The book just read from cover to cover in a very managed way, not too short not too long to meet a certain number of pages. It was just a good book to read, and I would recommend it as a good book to read.

Newly released from prison, Kurt Jansen is hoping to get a job restoring the Victorian home that Molly Finnerty is converting into a bed and breakfast. He needs the income to hire someone who can prove his innocence and help him win back the two children he lost after being convicted of murdering his wife. Molly has helped in prison ministry by giving jobs to ex-cons before but is nervous about hiring someone who was charged with murder. After speaking with a couple of references, coupled with prayers for guidance, she gives Kurt the job.

The more time they spend together, the harder it is to fight their growing attraction to one another. Molly extends Kurt’s job on her property to include working on the women’s shelter she is building. She comes to believe his story of innocence and helps place him on a path to realizing his dream to win back the custody of his children. Still, as much as she cares for him, she is reluctant to share her past with him for fear he will walk away. An unforeseen circumstance brings the issue to a head and she realizes that she must tell him her secret.

This book drew me in from the start. It is a Christian romance with characters who become very real as you follow their story.

The author provided me with a copy of the e-book in exchange for an honest review. However, I am going to add that I had already purchased a paperback copy of this book as I very much enjoy her work.

"A Place To Call Home" by award winning author Merrillee Whren is a heartwarming story with a timeless message about love, forgiveness and second changes. This book is an excellent choice for any Christian book club or members of a prison ministry.

Ms. Whren 's execution of of her story is very well done. The main characters have defined personalities, including their realistic struggles with trust and love.

The plot

Molly Finnerty hires Kurt Jansen to renovate her old Victorian house. He had been convicted of murdering his wife and spent six years in prison. Molly soon becomes Kurt's advocate when she believes his testimony of innocence and unjust imprisonment, but she struggles to be open with Kurt about the trauma of her own past. As their relationship develops they both learn to trust God, themselves, and each other.

The message

Of particular interest is how well Ms. Whren shows the reader the point of view from Molly and Kurt's perspectives, including the intensity of the trial to forgive oneself as it is to forgive others. Ms. Whren reminds us that the good news of Jesus Christ is that forgiveness is always victorious and available to all.

The cover of Merrillee Whren’s A Place to Call Home is an invitation to sit on the front porch and stay awhile. The first few pages settled me in my recliner by the fire as I raise the footrest and prepared to enjoy someone else’s dilemma. I was hooked the moment I realized the front porch belonged to an old Victorian in need of repair. I wasn’t too surprised when a handsome, skilled carpenter arrived on the scene to convert it into a bed and breakfast. I felt Molly Finnerty’s heart flutter every time he came near She’s involved in prison ministry and he’s served his time. So, what’s the dilemma that quickened my pulse with a tinge of fear? He claims he’s innocent, a victim of circumstantial evidence, but he’s hiding something. Does she want to be alone in the huge Victorian with a man who was convicted of killing his wife? And, Molly is hiding a secret of her own. How can love blossom in a setting like this? You’ll want to keep turning pages to find out.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked in particular that the characters were Christians and that this aspect was portrayed realistically. The characters and their story are engaging and interesting and I read it within a few days. I was surprised to find that it helped me in my own Christian life in that I know that we are expected to pray but I didn't know it would help so much to pray 'on the hoof' so to speak as we go through the ordinary day. This I have applied and found to have been a great help! My thanks to the author. To me, good literature should enhance and help our lives too so this was a surprising bonus, not to be expected from romantic fiction to be honest. A minor criticism would be that the author has put in far too many paragraphs from each of the leads about how they must fight their attraction and how the relationship could just never happen which I found A touch irritating! Surely there is a better way to express this? However, this is only a minor flaw; this book is well worth a read and the purchase price.
