Whenever You Come Around

Whenever You Come Around is the second book in the Kings Meadow Romance series by Robin Lee Hatcher. It's a contemporary Christian romance with an old-fashioned feel, yet is definitely set in today's world with touches of modern hallmarks, such as Pinterest.

Plot:
Charity Anderson has avoided her home town for many years. She moved away years ago and is now an up-and-coming author with a popular trilogy under her belt. She has a new deadline and is reluctantly house-sitting for her parents while her own home undergoes major construction. She is uncomfortable with being in her hometown once again.
Buck Malone, Charity's high school crush, is her parents' next door neighbor. She decides to ignore him (and everyone else) and focus on her writing. . . . . That is, until her own dog causes him to have extensive injuries. Then ignoring him is no longer an option.
What I liked:
*I tend to think of Robin's books as gentle romances with not much interaction between her hero and heroine. I feel that she focuses more on godly character growth and overcoming problems than on romance. So even though I tend to prefer more focus on romance and hopefully have some laughs along the way, I keep coming back to her books. Her writing is so very good, and I like how she shows great examples of Christian living. But I really loved this book from beginning to end. I felt like I got a deep romance as well as a deep story.
What I disliked:
*I realized about an hour after I read the happy ending that I had several questions I wanted answered. As another reviewer wrote, an epilogue would have been nice. However, I am guessing that Robin Lee Hatcher is going to address those details in her next Kings Meadow Romance, which is a legitimate venue to impart epilogue-worthy information, I think. My questions weren't unresolved issues; they're things I want to know about the future of our dear couple. So I can't really say the lack of an epilogue in this book is a flaw, per se.
Robin's books are great. They're clean, and they explore themes of Christianity and how they can look in a person's life.

How does an author write a romance when she’s never really been in love? Maybe the real-life cowboy next door can give her some inspiration…
Whenever You Come Around, the third book in Hatcher’s Kings Meadow series, can easily be read as a stand-alone without feeling lost. The characters felt so genuine and down-to-earth, and their faith spilled out naturally as an extension of their lives. The plot of grace and restoration was one that we can all relate to on some level, even if we haven’t lived the specifics of Charity’s story.
This was such a smooth read – once I started, I found it difficult to put down! Robin Lee Hatcher’s writing style is always near-perfection, and her characters draw you in to a friendship across the pages. I immediately connected to Charity though our lives are pretty different. And I think that’s another testament to the author’s talent – the fact that I could relate so well to this character who is on many levels my opposite.
I enjoyed Buck and Charity’s interactions – the back-and-forth of their conversations, the ease of their friendship – as well as meeting the characters and places in the town of Kings Meadows. I say “meet” because this was my first book to read in the series and I expected to be a bit confused at parts. But I honestly never was. Robin Lee Hatcher does a stellar job of helping the reader feel right at home no matter when in the series they’ve dropped by for a visit.
The fact that Charity’s house is being restored at the same time as Charity’s heart was, in my mind, no coincidence and added to the poignancy of the story. Even if I haven’t made the same mistakes or have the same regrets as Charity, I’ve made my own and regret them just as deeply. The message of Whenever You Come Around goes deeper than romance and a good plot – as all Christian fiction should. I believe it is partially this: Secrets lose their power when they have no place to hide. Whatever the size of your failures, God’s grace is no less amazing, His love no less healing, His restoration no less needed.
Whenever You Come Around puts more than one song in my head and gets 4 out of 5 stars! (I thought the ending was a little rushed.)

Whenever You Come Around by Robin Lee Hatcher was a GOOD book!
The only reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that RLH spoiled me. In both A Promise Kept and Love Without End, RLH interwove two stories: one present and one past.
So Whenever You Come Around was a lovely romance but I'm a spoiled reader. Boo-hoo. ;-)
In any event! I've loved all these stories set in KING'S MEADOW, Idaho. And this latest one featuring a woman who needs healing for her heart and a hero who needs healing for his body is captivating.
I highly recommend it and hope RLH will write another story with parallel story lines--YOU DO THAT REALLY GOOD, ROBIN!

2.5 stars. I finished it because it was short and I had nothing else to read.
Charity looked out for Buck only due to a sense of obligation and therefore there was no real chemistry between the two. Not to mention she didnt let herself feel any emotion besides anger and crying which left me wondering why Buck was so drawn to just have to know her. (A hero named Buck? Doesn't do it for me either).
Overall I found the story really boring and it fell very flat.

I truly enjoyed this story of an author haunted by a mistake from her past and all the consequences of it. Buck was a great hero, and the dog Cocoa a perfect "side character." I loved the moments with Buck's brother's family and Charity's sister Terri (who is everything a sister ought to be.). I'll definitely be reading more in this series, and I think I want to travel to Kings Meadow!

With her parents on "the trip of a lifetime," Charity's story begins as she arrives back home. Anxiety about "coming home" will lead her into a return to memories that she has tried so hard to forget. What she finds is a "good-neighbor" deed and a long lost romance.
"Hey, Charity. Is that really you? Haven't seen you in years. How are you?"
Buck Malone is currently a wilderness guide. He loves spending the summer and fall riding through the "back country, sleeping under the stars." Having bought the house next door to Charity's parents, neither of them expected that a run in with her dog would "open the doors" to renewing a friendship and a glimmer of hope.
"When she'd written her novels, she hadn't thought about trying to sell them to a publisher,
as crazy as that sounded.
She'd been wrapped up in the joy of storytelling, and that had been enough."
Self assured and on her way as an author, Charity had no plans on getting involved in the town or with any of those she grew up knowing. Given all of the changes with her publisher, she would be spending all of the time pursuing the craft of writing a "Romance" novel... something she knew little about and had no interest in discovering.
"Don't think you've scared me off yet, Miss Anderson.
I'll figure out what makes you tick. You'll see."
Buck knew it was dangerous to love. "He couldn't help loving his family members. He couldn't help caring about his close friends. But he could protect himself from the kind of pain his mom had gone through after his dad died." Or could he? Will Charity's facade be enough of a quest that could endear him to the point of no return?

You need to let somebody in, Charity.

The ease and quick witted responses between Charity and Buck is comfortable, like a nice pair leather gloves. Their relationship is "tooled" to perfection with every day encounters that are reminiscent of past summers. So well crafted you will drift off into snapshots from your own memory book. With a first person perspective you are drawn into Charity's and Buck's relationship, uniquely woven and flawlessly transitioned.
This is perfect summer romance, enjoy your visit to King's Meadow,

Wow! After reading Whenever You Come Around I can understand how a writer might fall just a bit in love with their own hero! Buck Malone considers himself a confirmed bachelor - at least until Charity Anderson moves into her parents' house next door to his. Buck remembers her from high school but not THIS version. He remembers a chubby girl who always stood in the background but Charity has undergone a transformation in the last 10 years. The blonde, blue-eyed beauty she is now draws Buck but she is putting out enough "stay away" signals that only someone truly oblivious would miss them. When Charity's dog causes an accident that breaks both Buck's right wrist and his right ankle, she feels duty-bound to offer her assistance as both the cause of his injuries AND his nearest neighbor.
Charity hasn't been back in Kings Meadow in years despite the fact that her parents still live there. When flooding in Boise damages her home she is forced to return to the town of her birth. Unfortunately, her memories of Kings Meadow are overwhelmed by her greatest pain and the secret she's kept for 10 years threatens her well-being. As she helps Buck, gradually her fears change to something else, something good that she doesn't feel she deserves.
Can these two - one damaged by her own choices and one whose duty to family took the future he wanted out of his reach - find love in telling their truth?
Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself and Charity's mistake damaged her deeply. Her sister Terri's love and her growing relationship with Buck begin her transformation but can she forgive herself?
I love Robin Lee Hatcher's books and this second book in the Kings Meadow series is beautifully written. As an added bonus, her descriptions of Idaho have made me add "Visit Idaho" to my bucket list! It sounds absolutely beautiful and since I've never been there, I'd love to see it. This is a fairly quick read. Would definitely recommend!

I was so captured by Robin Lee Hatcher’s newest novel, Whenever you Come Around, that I read it in two days. Another beautifully written story set in Kings Meadow, a fictitious place near Boise, Idaho. Charity Anderson returns to Kings Meadow after a long absence. She’s now a successful author but is paralyzed in her personal life because of a long-held secret. She returns to stay in her parent’s home while they are in Europe. Why does being in Kings Meadow bring back painful memories? Will she be forced to deal with her secret? And what about Buck Malone, the handsome bachelor and wilderness guide who lives next door? Charity used to have a crush on him when they were in high school but he is a confirmed bachelor. What happens when an accident forces them together? Will Buck rethink his decision not to consider marriage? Robin grabbed my attention right away as I wondered what painful memory Charity was trying to block from her mind. I also fell in love with her little dog Cocoa from the beginning. Cocoa plays a big part in the story. I enjoyed reading Robin’s beautiful descriptions of Idaho and found myself wanting to plan a trip there. Robin writes so seamlessly that the story flows and carried me along. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it especially to anyone who enjoys contemporary Christian fiction. If you’re like me, you’ll love Kings Meadow, the characters and sweet, little Cocoa.

Definitely a sweet romance and most definitely romantic--"Whenever You Come Around" belongs on your keeper shelf. I've read quite a few books by Ms. Robin Hatcher but this novel part of the Kings Meadow Series is one of my favorites.
Charity Anderson has one of those bad days that go from bad to worse when her dog, inadvertently causes her new neighbor, Buck Malone to fall and suffer injuries that will incapacitate him for a while. Both Buck and Charity for different reasons desire a single lifestyle with no room for a significant other.
That changes when Buck needs help to get chores done around his small ranch and help with meals and even some personal assistance. Charity, doesn't like men since she had a traumatic experience back in high school, which is why she hasn't returned to her hometown community before now. She definitely doesn't like handsome cowboys that like to flirt and cause her to feel things she doesn't want to feel any more.
Both Charity and Buck have trust issues; and Charity's past is full of pain which an astute Buck senses. Buck sweetly draws Charity out until she finds she has to trust him with her ugly past and leave him to choose whether she is worth it or not. Will Charity's courage to confront her past land her in the arms of her hero at the class reunion dance? Check it out.

Another contemporary romance from Robin Lee Hatcher, Whenever You Come Around returns to the charming town of Kings Meadow, Idaho and follows Love Without End in the series (but can easily be read as a standalone). This novel, like the previous one, offers an incredibly sweet romance, with quirky circumstances, independent characters, humorous moments and understandable obstacles to overcome, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of this delightful story. Quick, engrossing, and utterly heartwarming, Whenever You Come Around is a read that won’t leave fans of contemporary romance disappointed. I recommend it.

A breathtaking story celebrating God's grace and second chances.
The hero and heroine's first meet had me laughing and wincing. Talk about making a first impression! I'll leave you to judge whether it's a good one or a bad one. There's definitely some sizzle going on between Charity and Buck. He kind of enjoys it and can be a bit of a flirt -- she's just running scared. Falling in love is so not on her agenda. Pretty hard to stick to the program though when you're writing a romance staging a real life cowboy hero.
As with all Hatcher's books, the setting takes on a life of its own. Loved revisiting Kings Meadow. Am enamoured with rural Idaho thanks to this author's descriptive words.
I think Charity's journey touched me the most. She's chosen to silently battle a difficult past and that unwillingness to share has left some deep scars. Shame, insecurity and keeping God at a distance are the caustic results of her silence. My heart hurt for her. Buck is just the person to bring her out of her self-imposed exile.

"Whenever You Come Around" is a Kings Meadow Christian Romance book. I read her other Kings Meadow romance book last year (Love Without End) and absolutely loved it.
This book can be read as a standalone but mentions characters from her previous book.
This story line is about Charity's visit back to her hometown in Kings Meadow. She is house sitting for her parents for the summer while she tries to get inspiration for her upcoming book. She rekindles a friendship with her parents next-door neighbor Buck, who she knew in high school.
This story was very well written with lots of emotion and character development. I can't wait to read more books by this author, especially set in the town of Kinds Meadow. I liked the underlining themes of forgiveness and God's love throughout this book.

This story line is about Charity's visit back to her hometown in Kings Meadow. She is house sitting for her parents for the summer while she tries to get inspiration for her upcoming book. She rekindles a friendship with her parents next-door neighbor Buck, who she knew in high school.
This story was very well written with lots of emotion and character development. I can't wait to read more books by this author, especially set in the town of Kinds Meadow. I liked the underlining themes of forgiveness and God's love throughout this book.

Whenever You Come Around is a sweet romance set in the midst of the beauty of Kings Meadow, Idaho. In typical fashion, Robin Lee Hatcher creates rich characters with deep emotions who interact through an engaging plot filled with just the right amount of tension and intrigue.
The promise of budding romance is pretty obvious from the first pages. And the story goes deeper into the realm of forgiveness (especially for one's self) and healing of deep, long-held wounds. The story has a contemporary setting with some current issues that all come together in a warm tale of faith and love.
I highly recommend this very enjoyable read from a great author.

I was surprised to learn this is actually a song title as mentioned in the book and that Buck liked the song. Circumstances in their lives had them thinking that maybe they were destined to live life as singles. Sometimes turning an age changes perspective and wanting the same as others. Fear n having someone control you over words spoken over you is a struggle but Jesus can break those strongholds n ties. Usually someone has to show you how n be a support conquering negative thinking. The Devil wants to keep as silent n isolated. Liked the story very much. Look forward to the novella with Skye n Damon(vet n dance teacher).

I found myself quite enjoying this book. I have not read the two previous books in the series and did not feel as if I was missing anything. So it can certainly be read as a stand alone book.
I was instantly drawn in by Charity and her struggles. While this books is light and predictable in some ways, Hatcher does tackle some tough topics with grace and finesse.
The story hinges on God's forgiveness and acceptance.

What a wonderful story written by Robin Lee Hatcher. This is book two in A King’s Meadow Romance. A book with lots of things happening never a dull moment. A story about running from your past and learning to face your fears. There is so much love, compassion, heartache, pain and understanding going on. I love the reference to scripture and faith in the story. A must read story! Be sure to get pre-order your copy today! Remember it also makes a great gift.

I got caught up in Robin Lee Hatcher’s, Whenever You Come Around from the get-go. Successful author, Charity Anderson’s “desperate need for solitude and silence” guarantees her anything but. And Buck Malone is the perfect, handsome, confirmed-bachelor, cowboy to shake up her life. If only she could give in to her attraction, but Charity’s pain goes deep over the secret she dare not reveal.

This was a really sweet romance, Buck he was a real sweetheart, "after yesterday's ride, he'd realized how much he would like to take Charity dancing. Take her out on a real date." There was no naughtiness so this book is acceptable for YA readers, and Buck his thoughts I was intrigued by them, "marriage to Charity. He liked the sound of it- and that continued to surprise him when he thought of it- but it could be a long shot."

This was a cute story. Charity's secret wasn't a surprise to me, but I still enjoyed the story. I liked the chapters that had Buck and/or Charity out horseback riding. My favorite part was when Buck was given the scooter after he came home from the hospital. His reaction to that was quite humorous. I liked the ending of this book, but I was hoping for more. Although, I did already know what happened because I had read the third book in this series first.

It was okay...
I've read Books 1 and 2 in this series and they were good, quick reads. But I found myself wanting a little more depth. I think there could have been more emotional development around the roadblocks to the romance - more on dealing with what happened to the heroine rather than glossing over it. But it was okay...

Whether contemporary, historical or a blend of both, Robin Lee Hatcher delivers a smooth and delightful read. Whenever You Come Around was no exception.
It was great fun visiting Kings Meadow. Robin paints it as such a warm and beautiful town. I look forward to the next book in the series.

This was another wonderful book from Robin! I read it in one day. I love her easy writing and I can count on her books to be filled with sweet and clean dialog. I fell in love with Buck her hero and my heart went out to Charity. Can't wait to read the next one.

ending was abrupt, key plot conflicts that were foreshadowed never were addressed, the ending was such a copout. disappointed.

Well, this is going to be a weird review because as I was reading Robin Lee Hatcher’s Whenever You Come Around at night, I was also listening to Just Look Up by Courtney Walsh during the day, finishing both books about the same time. Both are so similar I had to actually make a chart of the two books to remind me of their differences, which weren’t significant.
-- In this one, the female lead, Charity Anderson, is an accomplished fiction writer who experienced a traumatic event in her life which precipitated her exodus from her hometown for the big city (Boise, Idaho), and for years has resisted ever returning.
-- In the other, the female lead is an accomplished business woman who, because of a traumatic incident, left home for the big city (Chicago) and for years has resisted ever returning.
-- Both women are about thirty.
-- Both women have dogs for their constant companions
-- In both books something caused them to return home, albeit reluctantly.
-- In both books the female leads avoid talking about their past traumatic events and have held on to their resentment/anger/anxiety all these years.
-- Both recently renewed their relationship with the Lord, but not much is said about it.
-- Both female leads befriend or reunite with hunky, self-assured men from their past.
Here is where my review becomes more “spoiler” than other reviews so I’ll hide it for the sake of those who want to read it and be surprised…

And after all that, I still have to refer to my notes to remember who was who in both books. Too similar, and I know I will not remember this. Thus my informative review — for my benefit. I truly preferred the way the story and relationships unfolded in the other book.
