As I've said before, I'm tired of witches, magical cats, dogs that solve crimes, baking sleuths and crafting ones, etc. So this mystery was WONDERFULLY FREE OF THESE! The protagonist, an aging Brit TV star is invited home to her family's estate for a murder mystery party--of all things. Her brother and friend have set this up to take her mind off losing her longtime TV crime series show. The beginning was a bit slower than I like. Mary Blake wallowed a bit longer than I thought necessary but I perservered and was not disappointed! An interesting setting, outrageous but believable characters and a good plot! I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more. I hope Inspector Corrigan will be appearing again!

By the end of the first chapter I had already had enough of Mary. By the end of chapter four I couldn’t stand any of the cast of characters. Unfortunately the story didn’t hold my attention either and although I read some reviews that say it improves towards the end I really wasn’t interested.

A great who-dunnit.

Mary, a 50 year old actress has just been replaced by a younger girl in long running TV crime show.
She is invited by her brother to a murder mystery party in their old family home; however, there is a real murder, and Mary is the main suspect.
A brilliantly written who-dunnit, and the first in a series.
Highly recommended for fans of murder mysteries.

An easy light read. Enjoyable if a little predictable.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries/amateur sleuths and are looking for a relaxing read that's not too taxing then this fits the bill.

Fired from her role as a tv detective (for the crime of being 50), Mary Blake is licking her wounds in private by downing copious amounts of gin and tonic. Alas, she is unable to wallow as her friend/PA and her brother have set up a networking weekend at his grand old house in the country. When one of the guests - indeed, the very actress who is replacing Mary on her show - winds up dead, everyone is a suspect. Especially Mary.

An Invitation to Murder is the quintessential country house murder, updated for modern times. There were enough suspects and enough intrigue to give a dutiful nod to the classic mysteries of old yet the telling was fresh and modern. I could easily see this as a new detective show in and of itself. When we got to the end and there was more to tell, I could almost hear the announcer saying "Next time, on Mary Blake..." Usually, this would rile me, but the way in which the author had crafted the story left me very eager for the next book.

Country house cosy. Recommended.

Does art imitate life?

Since Mary Blake was fired from her tv series she's been in a funk.
Now an invitation to a murder mystery weekend at her family home might offer some needed distraction. Of course 2 murders will put a damper on the fun.
With twists coming around every corner your kept guessing until the end.

Decent whodunnit mystery novel. The plot moves along at a brisk pace. Personally, for someone getting back to reading after a long time, this book was just the one I needed.

This book had all the makings of a great mystery story. At first I was drawn in, but by the end I wasn't sold. The book has plot issues and an erratic main character, lack of finesse and need for editing.

The book is about Mary Blake an actress who plays a detective on tv. She's recently been replaced by a much younger woman. In an attempt to cheer her up (and boost her career) her brother and her best friend set up a murder mystery party weekend at their childhood home with the guests including an agent, a producer, an actor, and accidentally, the young actress who replaced Mary. Trouble is afoot when one of them ends up dead.

My main issue is that none of the characters are fully fleshed out. One of the characters, Emily, is there but never does anything and later disappears all together. There was so much more that could have been done with the murder mystery party as well, it's totally glossed over. Our main character, Mary, tends to act erratic, and I tended bot to sympathize with her because of some if her actions.

The real issues come later in the story (no spoilers). At the beginning we are introduced to Hetty a woman who is doing some cooking for Pea, Mary's brother. Despite having been around, the police don't interrogate her. She isn't mentioned for awhile, then she shows back up and is making food like no problem, she isn't questioned or anything. Then we get into a real issue with editing. There is a side mystery involving Mary's parents. Mary finds something her mother (?) wrote. It states it is in her mother's handwriting. Then on the next page it states her father wrote it, as though it hadn't just been stated her mother wrote it. Then later it mentions again that her mother wrote it, and even later they had an 'Aha!' Moment where they realize their mother must have been aware of the writing. It was really confusing.

The book also ends very abruptly, very abruptly. Enough that I was surprised that it was over. Even though I knew the end was near, it was surprising it ended on the line it did.

I liked reading the book and I'd check out the next one, but I wish there had been more here. It had all the ingredients of a good mystery, but much like chicken soup it's about what you do with the ingredients. It needed to be simmered more with a bit more seasoning, to really make a great mystery.

I am going through all the books by A G Barnett.
This goes back to the classic cozy mystery. How the murder was committed was not difficult at all to figure out. The characters were rather caricature.

This is a traditional locked room murder/country house murder. Literally.

There is a murder mystery after dinner in their country house and afterwards the unlikable M is killed while she is locked in her bedroom.

The question beyond which of them did not like her enough to do this is how did they do this?

We have you very likeable police investigator and the traditional entourage of actors, producers, writers and agents.

I enjoyed the story, but it did seem a bit short for a novel.

I downloaded a free copy.

An easy undemanding read. Mary Blake is I think around late 40s and was until recently playing the leading role in a tv drama series about a lawyer, then suddenly out of the blue she was "let go" and a younger actress, Melanie Shaw, was taken 0n to play the role of a different lawyer in the soap drama. Mary was devastated, partly because she needed the money, and partly because she knew she couldn't act, this part was just her being herself, no acting required. She had played the part for around 20yrs. It was her one and only part.

Her brother, they were from a landed family who owned a Hall, had taken it upon himself to organise a murder mystery evening at their family home where he still lived, and had asked various literary people also to come along and be a part of the mystery event. They were an odd bunch of characters and Mary didn't really want to be there. The new replacement for her, Melanie Shaw, had also been invited. Melanie wasn't exactly a nice person, she was actually quite poisonous and when they were up on the roof watching a meteor shower, Mary took 4 laxative tablets from her secretary's bag and put them into Melanie's cider drink. They all went to bed.

The next morning Melanie was found dead behind a locked bedroom door with her head bashed in. The police arrive and initially Mary didn't tell them she had given her 4 tablets until she knew how Melanie had died. There may not be a need to tell them if she had been murdered by a blow to her head. Mary seems to get along with DI Corrigan and I wonder if something develops from this in a subsequent book. Anyway after a lot of thinking with all of them Mary finally believes she knows who the murderer is and she was right.

It was an interesting story but I wasn't that keen on any of them, Mary was the only one who had been fleshed out, the others seemed a bit one dimensional, and even Mary wasn't that likeable.

I liked the story, but there were a lot of errors. Some minor, but some major. The plot holes are really what bothered such as the switch from Melanie to Mary being the murder in the murder mystery party. In the beginning Melanie was and there was a whole scene around her being it, but then later in the story it switches to Mary being the murder. Another one being, in the random side mystery around Mary and Peas family (which I think should have been built in more or just dismissed) Mary’s mother apparently wrote this note, but then literally the next line her father wrote it. It then goes back and forth on who wrote it several times.

There are a lot of great aspects to this story, but I don’t think many are really played out. I think think that the murder mystery scene could have been built on a lot more. I also think the characters should have been built up more, we don’t really learn too much about most of them. They are all portrayed as potentially having reason to want to kill Melanie, but the story only really dives into why Flintock would have reason. Lastly the little side mystery I mentioned starts to build slightly throughout the book but then it’s just solved in a few pages very quickly at the end and ends rather abruptly.

I guess this is what I get for reading all the free books:) still a good story just these things bothered me about it which really took away from the book.

Long time TV star, Mary Blake whose performance as Susan Law in the hit detective series “Her Law” brought name and fame, is dropped from the show without warning, and replaced by young blonde bombshell, Melanie Shaw. Devasted, her ego and career in shreds, with no other source of income, Mary seeks solace in gin and wallowing in misery, much to the despair of her older brother Percy aka Pea, who manages their ancestral property, Blancham Hall, and her secretary and friend Dot Tanner. In a bid to cheer her up, and perhaps, restore her fortunes, Percy throws a house party for some friends from showbiz, with a murder game included for entertainment. Quite unwillingly, Mary and Dot make the long drive to the crumbling home, only to find that one of the guests, has unexpectedly, brought along his current girlfriend, and Mary’s nemesis, Melanie. And Melanie proves just as unpleasant as expected. The murder game is a big success, and the guests replete with good food and wine, retire to their rooms, though Mary is awakened by odd sounds in the night, and when she leaves her room, finds many of the other guests wandering around, too. Next morning, one of the guests is found murdered behind closed doors with no signs of a weapon or way of entry to the room. Can Mary once again assume her role of Susan Law and help the police solve the puzzle?
I would have rated it higher if the author had stopped at one mystery.

Mary Blake is feeling rather sorry for herself after being replaced by a younger actress on a long running British TV detective show. At fifty, she is at loose ends but her assistant Dot convinces her to accept an invitation from her big brother for a "Murder Mystery Party" at the family estate. Mary isn't thrilled with the idea but agrees. Though her brother means well by inviting some industry people - to help her get back on track - things get real when one of the guests actually is murdered in the classic locked room scenario! Was it the agent? The writer? The producer? The actor? Can Mary channel her TV characters' deductive skills and figure out who done it?

This was a fun read. The suspect pool wasn't large but sorting out who did it and why was still interesting as all of them had a reason to dislike the victim. There is also a family secret that Mary and her brother are trying to sort out which adds an additional dimension.

On the positive this book was a light and easy read, the answer for the murder was interesting and I liked the main character.

The negatives: the two intertwined plots were completely disconnected,

This book is about an actress who is replaced on a show for a younger model. When she goes to her brothers house in the country for the weekend someone is murdered. How Mary Blake solves the murder is an interesting story. There were a number of errors in the book which was somewhat distracting while trying to read the book. I believe the author needs to have the book re-edited. I am not an editor but the errors were glaring and for me, editing errors definitely detract from enjoyment of the book. The story was interesting, the mystery was well done and overall I enjoyed the book.

Mary's debut into teal crime

I liked the plot, I liked the characters, what I did not like was the poor editing. I found myself going back to previous pages too many times just to check if my memory was playing tricks on me. I also thought that the addition of the cryptic note did not add anything to the story, how could the reporter have read and memorized what was on the note so quickly when Mary was unable to remember what was in it, having read it?
Good story, exciting characters, still enjoyable despite poor editing.

I love this book!

A.G. Barnett has changed my way of looking at mystery writers! Before reading this I I thought that I would never find a writer that could keep me guessing who did it until almost the end!

He really surprised me and kept me spellbound throughout the whole thing! Kudos to an excellent example of mystery writing!
I encourage people who enjoy a fun and suspenseful read to grab this and find a comfortable place to read and lock the door because you won't want to be interrupted!

Great surprise

I got this book on a total fluke... It was free on Amazon! So my expectations were low. What a great surprise! A totally enthralling cozy mystery! Interesting, intelligent, engaging characters. An amateur sleuth that actually SOLVED the mystery, not just fell into and was not rude or pushy trying to get information. And they walked you step by step through the clues! Excellent! Well done! A higher standard in cozy mystery for sure. Can't wait to read more from this author.

This was a wonderful British cozy mystery whodunit. Mary Blake, our heroine, has just turned 50 years old. She was the lead actress on a TV crime drama, until now. Her brother invites her to be in a murder mystery dinner at there old home. There is a murder and the victim is none other then the young actress that replaced Mary on her show. Mary finds herself the prime suspect in the case. And her brother and friend join in helping her clear her name. It was great for the start of a cozy mystery series.

I really enjoyed this book, it is almost Agatha Christie - ish, but set in the present day. It features a clever story and great characters who are very believable, I especially liked Mary, the central character and her P.A. Dot who is delightfully down-to-earth. There are a few liberties taken with police procedure, but they are easily forgiven as they make the story flow more easily and make the book very readable.
I received an advance copy of the book, but have voluntarily reviewed it.

Gave this 3 1/2 stars. It started slow but I was hooked by the end of the book and looking forward to the next book. Mary has played the part of a detective on a very popular tv series. She finds herself out of a job and replaced by a much younger actress. Imagine her surprise when she goes home to attend a party given by her brother to find that the very actress who is replacing her is also in attendance. She soon finds herself the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

The storyline and setting for this are great, but there were a lot of errors which stopped me getting fully immersed in the story. Some were just silly errors, but there were other much more serious issues, such as the author mixing up whether it was Melanie or Mary who committed the murder in the game.

I did, just, find it interesting enough to continue, but the mistakes kept reminding me I was reading a book and made it impossible to suspend disbelief.

Great fun.

Whizzed through this. Thoroughly enjoyable escapism nonsense with three leading characters who were fun in their differing ways.
Enjoyed the setting with its crumbling walls, dust and draughts. Very realistic!!
So called celebrities creating chaos and showing their shallow characters. Secrets, jealousies, good old fashioned cussings.
A few editorial tweaks required.

I had this free. A very happy recipient.☺ It is worth buying.

A good story

Mary, an actress on a TV show plays a Detective. She is dumped by the show for a younger actress. Mary is devastated but agrees to attend a murder mystery party at her childhood home where her brother Pea lives. Secrets & murder are actually played out for real. Mary and her personal assistant Dot try to solve the case. I enjoyed the story. Characters were liked & disliked and storyline was developed. I enjoyed it as a quick read.

Mary Blake is one actress who knows her stuff - and her TV sleuthing comes in handy when digging out the murderer of her television show replacement. The action is fast-paced, the plotting intelligent and well thought out. And that ending! I hope it bodes well for Mary, Pea and Dot. Looking forward to more.
