Where was backup? <\/span><\/p>\n

Roark Holland squinted past the harsh streetlight glare to the vehicle that\u2019d arrived only minutes ago. A van parked in a darkened part of the street. Parked at the curb of the old building housing the Pugsley family in Witness Protection. The family Roark needed to move to another safe house.<\/span><\/p>\n

The family\u2019s cover had been blown. With the Pugsley\u2019s whereabouts known, their enemy would seek the total annihilation of anyone who could identify them, namely Mr. Pugsley. <\/span><\/p>\n

Roark glanced in his rearview mirror. Still no team. <\/span><\/p>\n

A light flipped on inside the van, just for a fraction of a second. But in that heartbeat, Roark took in the black jackets. The guns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grabbing his Beretta 98 in one hand, he pressed the transmit button on his radio with his other. \u201cDemott, we have movement on the street. Where\u2019s my backup?\u201d He wasn\u2019t prepared to go in alone\u2014no tactical equipment, no comm, no extra ammo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStay put, Holland. Team\u2019s ETA, less than five minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The van door slid open.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo time to wait. I\u2019m going in.\u201d Roark\u2019s grip tightened on the Beretta.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three men, decked out in black, stepped onto the road.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWait, Holland. Don\u2019t go in without backup. That\u2019s an order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But he could control the situation. \u201cThere\u2019s three of them. No time.\u201d Roark turned off the radio and slipped it into his coat pocket, eased open the door, and stepped onto pavement.<\/p>\n
