Chapter One<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Dornby Manor<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Wiltshire, England<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Early autumn 1886<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve told you, Father, I won\u2019t marry him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas Gleason held a matchstick to the bowl of his pipe and puffed repeatedly, luring the tobacco to ignite. \u201cIt\u2019s a good match, daughter. Everyone has heard of the Tremaines, even here in England.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Heard of their money, perhaps . . . <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Lottie remembered the whispered rumors about the Tremaines. She knew her parents hated gossip\u2014or pretended to for propriety\u2019s sake\u2014but now was not the time for her to be timid. \u201cSome say the Tremaines are nouveau riche.<\/i> The elder Mr. Tremaine is but one generation away from those who peddled their goods on the streets of New York City.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her father pointed his pipe at her. \u201cPerhaps. But Tremaine\u2019s Dry Goods has grown to encompass a five-story building within an entire city block.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother shook her head and said beneath her breath, \u201cA glorified shopkeeper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Father shot her a glance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mother nodded to the maid, Dora, to pour the tea. \u201cWe are the ones doing the Tremaines the favor. You are Sir Thomas Gleason,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Gleasons have ties to Richard the Second. Our name is listed in Debrett\u2019s<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A puff of smoke billowed in front of Father\u2019s face. \u201cNow, now, Hester. By seeking a goodly match for our daughter, we\u2019re not negating our own roots. It\u2019s a blessing the Tremaines have shown interest in our Charlotte, especially since they\u2019ve never met any of us. And considering . . . \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lottie interrupted. \u201cYou act as if meeting me might cause them to change their minds. I may not be a ravishing beauty, Father, but I\u2019ve been complimented many times regarding my appearance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no,\u201d her father said. \u201cDon\u2019t take offense. You\u2019re a lovely girl. I was merely pointing out the odd circumstances of . . . our situation.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Hester coughed and put her ever-present handkerchief to her mouth. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lottie tried unsuccessfully to squelch her annoyance at her mother\u2019s cough. Hack, hack, hack. Perhaps if Mother spent more time outside, walking the grounds of their Wiltshire estate, her health would improve. But Mother prided herself on indoor pursuits, namely her needlepoint chair cushions. Best in the county, she bragged. Lottie didn\u2019t care for such nonsense. To go to so much work only to have someone sit upon it was absurd.<\/span><\/p>\n

As was this conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lottie set her teacup down, rose from her chair, and moved to the windows that overlooked the front lawn. \u201cI don\u2019t see why we have to talk about this now.\u201d Or ever. <\/i>\u201cIt\u2019s my birthday and my friends will be arriving for my party soon and . . . \u201d She turned to her mother directly. \u201cSpeaking of my party, why aren\u2019t you bustling about? A dozen of my friends will arrive in just a few hours, yet if I didn\u2019t know better, I\u2019d think the party was next Tuesday rather than today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
