My guest today is my longtime writing friend Eric Wiggin. He’s got a special memory to share with us! Here’s Eric:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mother Now 95<\/strong><\/h2>\n

“My mother, 95, remembers with glee how, at 19, she, her sister, 15, and my grandmother<\/strong><\/p>\n

tricked my grandfather (\u201cPapa\u201d) into giving away the bride. Weddings in 1938, Mother<\/strong><\/p>\n

says, usually took place in the bride\u2019s home, unlike the fancy church ceremonies featured<\/strong><\/p>\n

in old-timey magazines like Reminisce.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Her father, not then a believer, <\/strong><\/h2>\n

had spent his rough-and-tumble youth in Boston.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He took a particular dislike to the shy-but-dapper Maine farm boy who showed up each<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sunday to drive Papa\u2019s three women to church. Grandpa ran a country store, and as a<\/strong><\/p>\n

part-time deputy sheriff, he was also the Saturday night bouncer at the local dance hall.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My mother, Polly, had on her new dress and shoes that Saturday evening in May, and<\/strong><\/p>\n

she and teen sister Hilda had fixed each other\u2019s hair. Both girls wore corsages of apple<\/strong><\/p>\n

blossoms from the old tree by the well. Dad\u2019s older brother had sneaked their parents and<\/strong><\/p>\n

the minister into the living room via a side door.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But . . . a problem. Papa, oblivious to the wedding preparations <\/strong><\/h2>\n

in the house beside the store, was still with a customer\u2014a man who liked to spin long, colorful yarns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Papa finally came inside. He hurried upstairs. Maybe ten minutes later he<\/strong><\/p>\n

appeared in the downstairs hallway, wearing his sharkskin suit, tie and white shirt,<\/strong><\/p>\n

his badge pinned discreetly beneath his lapel. Grandma opened the sitting-room door.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re needed in here, Will.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Papa stepped in\u2014greeted by a grinning Polly and Hilda, a scared farm boy in a<\/strong><\/p>\n

three-piece grey flannel suit, and a properly solemn minister, who intoned, \u201cWho giveth<\/strong><\/p>\n

this woman to be married to this man?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Papa hesitated a moment. \u201cHer mother and I do,\u201d he stammered. He trotted<\/strong><\/p>\n

outside to his car and drove off to his job at the dance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mother and Dad honeymooned <\/strong><\/h2>\n

in New Hampshire\u2019s White Mountains. A week<\/strong><\/p>\n

after the newlyweds returned, Dad\u2019s parents threw a reception in their farmhouse home.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nobody had to sneak around that evening!<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Eric & Strong Women in his stories<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Born in 1939 in on a farm in Maine, I grew up surrounded by strong, caring<\/strong><\/p>\n

women. With my parents and six siblings, I shared that roomy farmhouse\u2014built half a<\/strong><\/p>\n

century earlier by my paternal grandfather\u2014with Dad\u2019s Victorian parents. <\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two miles away were Mother\u2019s parents, unmarried sister and great-grandmother. Papa loved me,<\/strong><\/p>\n

too, treating me as the son he never had. In my historical novels for girls 8-14, and adult<\/strong><\/p>\n

fiction with strong romantic threads, these apparitional ladies of my heart appear, like the<\/strong><\/p>\n

aunts of Whittier\u2019s Snowbound, as colorized shadows lived out in the lives of my intrepid<\/strong><\/p>\n

female protagonists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amy Miller, in THE RECLUSE, is a strong woman who stood by her father, Rev.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wes Miller, when he was forced out of a long-term pastorate in Pennsylvania because<\/strong><\/p>\n

of his convictions about military service. Amy also grew up with a close relationship<\/strong><\/p>\n

with her Amish grandmother. Grossmutter Miller, ironically was shunned by her church<\/strong><\/p>\n

for allowing Amy\u2019s father, years earlier, into her \u201cPennsylvania Dutch\u201d home in his<\/strong><\/p>\n

American Expeditionary Force chaplain\u2019s uniform.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy\u2019s firsthand experience with religious persecution enables her to emphasize<\/strong><\/p>\n

with Vaughn Lehmann, the odd, but talented and loving outcaste of Portugal, Maine, the<\/strong><\/p>\n

remote seaside village where, in 1942, the Miller family went to minister.<\/strong><\/p>\n
