My guest today is secular author Lisa Watson whom I discovered over at Shades of Romance http:\/\/www.sormag.blogspot.com<\/a> Lisa writes for Harlequin’s Kimani Romance line, a secular line. I asked Lisa to share her experience in writing for a Guidepost devotional book in order to remind us that many secular authors also love Jesus. Here’s Lisa:<\/span><\/p>\n

When God Creates an Opportunity<\/h2>\n

“I\u2019ve learned that when God creates an opportunity for me, or presents a path I\u2019m supposed to walk, it comes as a right place, right time prospect, or subtle suggestions.\u00a0 I\u2019m a published author and I write multicultural romances.\u00a0 I love writing about strong characters drawn together by love, respect and familial ties.\u00a0 I go about learning in a by-the-book manner, and never \u201cwing\u201d it when it comes to information I\u2019m not well-versed on.\u00a0 However, when this opportunity presented itself, I learned the true power of being brave, and just what faith was all about.<\/p>\n

It started with a phone call.<\/h2>\n

My agent presented me with an opportunity.\u00a0 She prefaced it with, \u201cI know this is out of your comfort zone, but…\u201d and asked if I were interested in writing for the new Mornings with Jesus devotional that Guideposts was publishing for 2013.\u00a0 My first response was\u2026Seriously? Me?\u00a0 I pondered if I could even write a devotional,\u00a0and what I would possibly have to say since I wasn\u2019t a Christian fiction author, and not that knowledgeable.\u00a0\u00a0But, like I said earlier, I believe that when we\u2019re called to do something,\u00a0especially out of our comfort zone, it\u2019s for a purpose.<\/p>\n

I asked my husband his opinion.<\/h2>\n

He said, \u201cCan you write devotionals?\u201d\u00a0 I replied, \u201cI don\u2019t know, but apparently, I\u2019m supposed to find out.\u201d\u00a0 I was intuitive enough to realize that God guided me toward this project for a reason.\u00a0 I called her back and agreed.
\nI received a sample format and my deadline.\u00a0 They wanted forty devotionals per author.\u00a0 At first I worried.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not well-versed in scriptures\u2026I\u2019m hardly the most religious person I know\u2026what if I made a mess of it?\u201d\u00a0 I decided to turn off the self-doubt and listen.\u00a0 I had to be calm to hear the answers: That not being well versed in scriptures\u00a0would help, not hinder me.\u00a0 To trust that the words would be there when I needed them, my devotionals would be relevant, and would touch who they were supposed to.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d have Divine guidance to help me down my path\u2014it was true.<\/h2>\n

Scriptures that Moved Me<\/h2>\n

The words just flowed out of me and onto the page.\u00a0 I found scriptures that moved me, and could relate them back to something that occurred in my life, or in someone\u2019s life I knew.\u00a0 Words can\u2019t express how amazing the experience was\u2014my cup runneth over.\u00a0 The most memorable moment was receiving the first fan mail I\u2019ve ever received by U.S. Mail.\u00a0 It was a Thank You card from someone thanking me for writing my devotionals, and to say that I\u2019d done a great job.\u00a0 That what I said resonated in a profound way.
\nHad I not heeded God\u2019s gentle prompting, I would\u2019ve missed an opportunity to grow and touch readers in need of inspiration.\u00a0 The abundant blessings wouldn\u2019t have occurred had I not been strong enough to step outside of my comfort level\u2014or had faith enough to walk my path.”–Lisa<\/p>\n
