Valentine\u2019s Day with a Twist<\/p>\n

Sandy walked down the windblown road, letting her dog big mutt Mulligan pull her along. The blustery February wind matched her mood. This would be her second Valentine\u2019s Day since she\u2019d lost Jim. After years of marriage, they had almost stopped celebrating Valentine\u2019s Day except for Jim\u2019s cheery Valentine\u2019s Day Good Morning! which had always included a mention of how much he loved her.<\/p>\n

She blinked back tears, not wanting to give in to self-pity and get only chapped cheeks in return.<\/p>\n

But then Mulligan began tugging at the leash yanking her off the road into the wooded area. She strained to prevent him but he was stronger and pulled her along. Then she spotted it, a jogging shoe protruding from behind a tree trunk. \u201cOh, my!\u201d Then she was hurrying right beside Mulligan.<\/p>\n

A man with silver hair lay on the jogging path, unconscious. Sandy whipped out her phone as Mulligan whined and sniffed around the man. A quick few words to 911 and help was on its way.<\/p>\n

Mulligan was licking the man\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

A moan sounded. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d a gruff voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must have fallen,\u201d Sandy said, moving to hover over him. \u201cI\u2019ve called 911–\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to do that–\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly did,\u201d Sandy snapped. \u201cYou were unconscious. You might have a concussion. Or have suffered a heart attack. How did I know?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s eyes widened and then his expression lifted, almost into a grin. \u201cWell…you\u2019re right of course.\u201d\u00a0 He looked around. \u201cI think I tripped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandy motioned toward a protruding tree root from an ancient oak tree by the path.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would do it all right. My ankle.\u201d He gestured toward it. \u201cI might have twisted it. And by the way I\u2019m Hal.\u201d He offered his hand<\/p>\n

She shook his cold hand and introduced herself only as Sandy. The sound of a siren sounded in the distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like a fool,\u201d he said, lifting himself to rest on his elbows.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen,\u201d Sandy said good naturedly as she stepped away so she could be seen from the road. \u201cEven a super hero can trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man grinned.\u00a0 \u201cAnd how many superheroes have you come to help?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandy chuckled at this.<\/p>\n

The EMT\u2019s hurried up and swarmed around them. They determined that Hal had an injured ankle and needed an X-Ray to rule out a break and a doctor should make a call about a concussion. Soon he was being slid into the back of the ambulance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait!\u201d Hal called out. \u201cWhat\u2019s your last name? I want to be able to thank you properly!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no need,\u201d Sandy called back from the curb.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s too cold and I might have a broken ankle, I can\u2019t hang around and wait for you to walk your dog by here again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandy drew in breath at the way Hal was looking at her. \u201cMy last name\u2019s Warner. You\u2019ll find me under my late husband\u2019s name Jim.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGot it ! Jim Warner!\u201d<\/p>\n

The door was shut and the ambulance took off with the whine of its siren. Mulligan whoofed after it. Sandy couldn\u2019t move, the thrill of having a man ask for her full name freezing her in place. Mulligan dragged her into starting their walk again.<\/p>\n

Had Hal just been being polite? Only time would tell. But she couldn\u2019t stop herself from grinning.<\/p>\n
