Here&#8217;s a taste of the story:<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>Prologue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>New York City, <\/i><i>November 1983<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Through two horrific days and one long night, Leigh Sinclair had held it together. Until an hour after she hugged her little girl and watched a doctor give the child a sedative at the hospital and finally, thankfully, brought her here\u2014home to her own bed. Then Leigh had fallen apart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>All her self-control dissolved in an instant, and she started shaking and couldn\u2019t stop. Nate had led her from her sleeping child into the dark living room. He\u2019d nudged her down onto her sofa. Murmuring, he\u2019d sat down and laid her head against his shoulder. And slowly the trembling had ebbed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just a few weeks ago, Leigh had only known Nate Gallagher, NYPD detective, professionally. He\u2019d made it clear she interested him, but she\u2019d kept him at arm\u2019s length as she did every other man. Then she\u2019d needed him and he\u2019d come through for her. Now he stroked her long hair with steady hands, giving her wordless comfort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s all my fault.\u201d The words flowed out of Leigh\u2019s mouth a second time. Through the crisis, she\u2019d fought voicing this admission, knowing it wouldn\u2019t help, knowing that guilt was natural and unavoidable. Yet all the while fearful that someone else\u2014<i>everyone else<\/i>\u2014would point accusing fingers at her.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate said nothing in reply, just continued stroking her hair.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In her weakness, she felt the latent strength in his large rough hands. \u201cI\u2019ve always carried so much guilt about Carly,\u201d she whispered. \u201cNot just now. But always.\u201d <i>And I always will.<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Little Carly\u2019s face glowed in Leigh\u2019s mind. Grandma Chloe always said Leigh\u2019s little girl got her looks from Leigh\u2019s grandfather, who\u2019d died in World War I. That was because Grandma Chloe had never seen Carly\u2019s father. Carly was the spitting image of her father with his fair skin, black hair, and gray eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But Carly had never seen her father, either.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This fact never stopped gnawing at Leigh. She knew it had created an invisible barrier between her and Carly. Every time she looked at her, her daughter\u2019s sober little face\u2014her silent little mouth, those somber eyes that hid every thought\u2014haunted Leigh.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEverything will be okay,\u201d Nate said at last.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leigh gazed up at him. His face was guarded by shadow, but the moonlight illuminated the warmth of his auburn hair.
