Lyn Asks this Month’s Question — 15 Comments

  1. Hymns were what I was first introduced to but contemporary Christian is now my go to for praise and daily worship. If I had to choose a favorite hymn…It would be….hmmm not sure of the name of the hymn but it had a verse “they will know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes, they will know we are Christians by our love.”

  2. I love How Great Thou Art it declares the majesty of our Father God.

  3. My favorite is a more contemporary song by Mercy Me, I Can Only Imagine. When I first heard that sing I was at a church I was visiting for the first time in the early 2000s and I was in tears in seconds. The words resonated so deeply within me that I began attending this church regularly. I still listen to the song when I’m feeling lost.

  4. During Covid, as I was preparing a devotional, the Lord brought to mind a hymn I had not heard nor sung in many years: “May Jesus Christ be Praised!” The verses spoke to many years and feelings during that time. Then I discovered an updated version by Aaron Shust on you tube. It quickly became a favorite.I would love to sing it in church.
“When morning gilds the skies my heart awakening cries, “May Jesus Christ be praised!”

  5. Hymn: Here I Am, Lord

    Contemporary: Step By Step

Both talk about being called by God and choosing to follow.

  6. How Great thou Art has been a favorite of mine. I feel so close to my God and Savior when I’m singing that one. It reminds me That God keeps the Awe in Awesome like nothing else can. It’s singing directly to the Lord, leaving all your “stuff” right there while remembering what God has done for you! It’s worshipping right where you are at the feet of Jesus! “Then sings my soul!” My soul sings? What a visual! Praise the Lord!

  7. Lyn, Hi from farming country in Central PA. We moved here recently and my favorite song (now) is In Jesus Name (God of Possible). I think of my former congregation and this song comes to mind. I was extremely active there (used to be church secretary and was the only deacon for years) even preaching and leading service 8 times last year, including 2x with less than 24 hours notice. I sing this song to them in my mind, because everyone panicked when I left that things wouldn’t get done. I have every confidence that with God’s help they are doing fine. My favorite old time hymn is How Great Thou Art.

  8. One of my favorite hymns was written by Horatio Spafford- It is Well With My Soul. Horatio wrote this when he went through a terrible time. This song has comforted me during hard times of my life and I am grateful for its healing words!

  9. Oh Lyn, Almost too many to list, but if I must only have one, I think it would have to be “In Christ Alone.” To me that really says everything about our faith. I have asked that it be included in my funeral service. Being realistic, at the age of 79, it is coming sooner rather than later. and I want to make a statement of my faith at the time.

  10. I have so many…one of the newest songs that I love is Christus Victor (Amen):

Now to the Lamb upon the throne
    Be blessing, honor, glory, power
For the battle You have won
    Hallelujah
With every tribe and every tongue
We join the anthem of the angels
In the triumph of the Son
    Hallelujah
    Amen

Such a powerful song to worship the Lord!

  11. Lyn greetings from Northern MI (near Cadillac),
My favorite hymn is “Come Thou Found of Every Blessing”. I like the tune quite a lot and it just lifts my soul in praise when I sing it. I think the part the touches me the most is the second stanza, “here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by the help I’ve come…” Each of us has had trials and issues in life. No one is perfect right. Someone I respect (Ellen White) once wrote, “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.” My understanding is that an Ebenezer is an object of remembrance that is setup NOT for us to worship as worship belongs to God alone, but for us to see and REMEMBER what God as brought us through and all He has done for us. And finally the last part of the hymn, “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love, Here’s my heart, oh take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.” Oh how easy it is to slip off the path and “leave” God, but He is always ready to take us back. He wants nothing more then to have a relationship with each of us and to bring us to His house to live after that grand second coming event as spoken of in Revelation! Each of us should be encouraged as we turn to God because He loves us!!
Thanks for letting me share. Have a blessed day.

  12. In the Garden is a hymn that is special to me. I can picture myself in a quiet, peaceful setting of nature, a flower garden or a meadow of wildflowers. In my mind, as I walk, Jesus joins me and we talk about whatever is happening. That thought brings me great peace and joy.

There are several other songs that also touch my soul but that is a long time favorite beginning in my childhood.
