Lyn Asks this Month’s Question! — 26 Comments

  1. Lyn Cote here~ I loved reading all these replies! I connected with those who love to learn AUTHENTIC history in the vehicle of exciting fiction! When I write an historical series, I do as much research as I did when I wrote my masters thesis. And I love it just as much! I’m always fascinated to discover so much detail about a place and time that I never knew!! I used to teach English and history classes and I could have combined both with historical fiction!!! And the kids would have enjoyed it so much more!! After all, history without people is just facts!

  2. I love Historical Romance. I love the way they lived, the styles of clothing, and that things were much cheaper. I’d be considered rich back then, now it’s middle class.

  3. I love historical fiction, especially romance. The latest I’ve read is Dakotah Treasures 4-book series by Lauraine Snelling. History classes in school were always very boring to me. I memorized all the dates and names for tests and immediately relegated them to the lost files cabinet. They should offer history classes using historical fiction. I have learned more history reading these than I ever learned in school!

  4. I have always loved history, so I love historical novels. I learn a lot from reading them, but I do tend toward American history first. How people settled here and what challenges they faced and conquered makes me realize how good I have it, built upon their lives. Keep them coming! (The Texas series should be a movie! Who knew the history behind the Alamo??)

  5. I love historical fiction especially of the old American west. When the heroine and the main male character. Are struggling ( for any reason, the trip west, a loss, or a family/neighborhood conflict, or whatever and wind up finding each other during the struggle. Wonderful!

  6. I love reading historical novels as they are captivating and I love when they’re based off of true history events!

  7. Historical fiction is my very favorite genre. I do enjoy contemporary fiction and women’s fiction.

  8. I love historical romances maybe because it seems like an easier time of life in some ways. With all the things that are going on in our world at this time, going back in time seems like a good idea. At least the principles of those days and history has always held a great fascination for me. Maybe because I don’t know much of my own history. I don’t have a favorite author. I just love books that will take me out of my time period and into another time where life seems to make more sense then some of the things happening in our world today.

  9. I do enjoy historical novels. I like WWII and Regency the best but also enjoy other time periods.

  10. I do enjoy historical novels! Love seeing how people lived in olden times and the struggles they went through to survive!

  11. Heather Blanton is my favorite historical author. I enjoy historical books that make me feel good.when you struggle with elderly depression at times I’ve found that books and good stories are cheaper than pills!I really love to read and your books are at the top of my list too.

  12. Yes I do enjoy Historical Fiction I think partly cos I get to learn about history in different places. Gilbert Morris has so much history in his books. I am still waiting for a trivia question who was Roland Garros home of the French open named after and why. Gilbert Morris was one of my favourited but I have many others. I enjoy the American west books, but also WW1 and 2. about the only ones I am not a fan of are regency or English history which deals with the Ton in anyway. Naval is ok. So have I read Georgette Heyer the answer would be no. I know Downton Abby was Edwardian but I never watched it or Bridgeton as I just couldn’t get into it. How ever did enjoy The Scarlett Pimpernel.

  13. When I was a child, riding in a car to visit relatives, we drove past an old abandoned mansion in total disrepair. Although my parents wondered why it hadn’t been torn down, I always created a story in my mind about who might have lived there and whether I could recreate a similar life if I owned it. My influence back then was “Little Women” and “Little Men” by Louisa Mae Alcott. Her books hooked me on historical novels. They are a way to bring history alive and more personal. What did the families do when the father was fighting in a war? Were veterans of sound mind, let alone body, when the war ended? What did women really think about the societal norms of Regency England? Then there were family stories about my grandparents, born in the Civil War era, who did the outrageously bold thing of traveling by horse and buggy from Pennsylvania to Washington, DC, for their honeymoon to dance at President Benjamin Harrison’s Inaugural Ball. What simple farmers did such a thing? Did ordinary people even go on a honeymoon in 1889? In middle school I found an extremely old history book that had been my mother’s (think no later than WWI), in which a scene from the Battle of Saratoga told of a cannonball ripping through General Burgoyne’s tent during his dinner, and changed his battle strategy. I used that scene to enter an essay contest in eighth grade and received honorable mention. Our dry history texts today would be hard pressed to include a fascinating nugget like that, if a battle or general from that far in the past would even be acknowledged. From that point on I was drawn to novels that accurately reflected the events or mores of the time as seen through the eyes of people who could have been eyewitnesses. It’s so much better to give meaning to the what of an event if you can live it along with the people who lived it.

  14. I LOVE historical novels! I’ve always loved history. The way people lived in the past, who well-known figures were like has always fascinated me. I think my favorite historical novelist would be…actually, I can’t choose just one! I love Jane Austen, Henry James, Agatha Christie, Angela Hunt…so many authors & books!

  15. I love historical fiction. Usually it is like an adventure to a different world. I do not enjoy war stories so avoid those. I try to envision places I know and how they were different then. There are so many new things to learn.

  16. I thoroughly enjoy historical novels! I have always liked history. I think it takes you to a different world and helps you see your world in a new light, the good and the bad. Some of my favorite historical authors are Julie Garwood, Jude Deveraux, Elizabeth Lowell and Joanna Lindsey. I have not read Georgette Heyer but now plan to pick up one of her Regency books to read. Thanks for sharing!

  17. I do love good historical novels. I think my favorites are Joanna Barker. I’ve never read one of your’s but will now!

  18. I never enjoyed history in high school, but I do enjoy some historical novels. I especially enjoy Jane Kirkpatrick who writes about different places in Oregon. I live in Oregon, so it is very interesting to learn about the different cities.

  19. I read the Song of Acadia series by Jeanette Oke years ago and that got me hooked on historical fiction. I never liked history in school as a child but these books have enough history and personal story together to get me hooked. I have read many since then. Thank you for all your writings!

  20. Historical novels are wonderful! I enjoy them because they provide such great insight into historic places and events, and make them so much more than just facts to memorize and words on a page. They draw me into lifestyles, relationships and all kinds of things that fascinate. They paint vivid pictures of all those things that make them memorable. A favourite author when I was younger was Mary Stewart (Georgette Heyer was in there too). Now I read mostly Christian books, and really enjoy romantic suspense, especially you, Sara Blackard, Dee Henderson, Lynn Shannon, Lynette Eason… well, the list is actually pretty long.

  21. I love historical fiction.
It’s fun to learn some history and have a great story to go along with it!

  22. I love mystery and add that with historical books you got me! Sometimes we need to go back on a historical adventure.
Always want to learn something new and when authors do their research to bring you actual information and add creativity to their stories everyone should try to read a
    Historical romance…..

  23. I do like historical fiction. I often wonder why teachers don’t teach history with fiction together
with facts; it makes it more real in some ways. I don’t have the time to read as much as I want, so I
    mostly read romantic suspense.

  24. I do enjoy historical romances. They transport you into a time and place that you can visit in the pages of a book. My favorite is Julie Garwood’s Ransom.

  25. I have always loved historical fiction. To be transported out of my current state (typically curled up in my bed) is magical! As a kid I had 4 brothers, no sisters. Reading historical fiction kept me super imaginative. Now, I am a homeschool mom of 10 kids. Reading is such a restful hobby for me when I need to step away and connect to a different time period!
