  1. Hi Patricia,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. It’s such a blessing to grow up in a musical household, isn’t it? Both my grandmothers played the piano and my maternal grandmother was the church organist, so I grew up around music too. I took piano lessons for years, but my hand-eye coordination was never good enough to do all that well. Voice lessons went much better. My eldest son and daughter both have amazing voices. son has a deep baritone with perfect pitch. He, my husband and I sing with a small Celtic choir.

As I mentioned above, I don’t consider myself very prolific and the longer I’m in the business, the slower I get. Especially if family life is throwing me curve balls, as if has this past year trying to transition my twins from high school to community college and vocational placements.

  2. Hi Linda! It’s one of those things that sounds good when you say it fast. 😉

One of those was a reissue of a book I wrote years ago for the Montana Mavericks series, another was more of a short story and another was the novella for The Wedding Season. The other three were a miniseries that took me a couple of years to write – the publisher waited until all three were finished to release them back to back. So I had a long time with no books out, then a whole slew at once.

  3. That is so very true, Connie!

Music helps me with my writing, too. When I’m working on my first draft, I listen to instrumental music (anything with words distracts me). The music takes me away from real-world distractions and puts me into the world of my story.

  4. I sang to my boys at night in the early years. Music has always been a big part of our lives, as my mother was a music teacher and my siblings and I all learned to play multiple instruments. My husband’s family all sing so music invades our territory all the time. My sons are quite musical too. Even now when it’s “quiet time” that typically means there’s soft music playing while they read, draw or whatever.

How hard is it to be so prolific?

  5. I was blessed with only one child so I have probably never experienced the challenges that compare to having twins, a child with special needs or raising a child alone. I do, however, use music daily to help me face challenges, to sooth me or just to give me enjoyment. In fact, one of my co-workers, who recently started working in our library, commented that “You really like music and you really like to sing, don’t you”. Another co-worker asked me if I used music to help me in trying times (I am the cataloger, technology person and Adult Services librarian in our small library). So, yes, music is with me constantly and I love all kinds, except for the hard rock stuff that I can’t understand! 🙂
I believe that God gave us ears to hear the wonderful sounds of nature and the wonderful tones that music provides. If David could find comfort in the psalms, why shouldn’t we find comfort in our music?

  6. Sorry I didn’t get back last evening, but a storm knocked out power for several hours – thank goodness it waited until after I finished making supper!

I did a drawing from among those who commented and the winner of a copy of The Wedding Season is Virginia Jones! Virginia, if you could send me your mailing address to hrwdebhale@aol.com, I will get your book in the mail right away.

    Thanks everyone who left comments.

  7. Hi Judy. I know what you mean about wishing your children lived closer. I have all four of mine home right now, but the nest will start emptying before long.

I like the hymns you mentioned too. A couple of my favorites are Be Thou My Vision and He Leadeth Me.

  8. 6 books in 6 months! That is so awesome. I can barely read that many…..!

  9. I always wanted twins when I was younger. God didn’t bless me with twins but he did bless me with a wonderful Son and a wonderful Daughter. How I wish they lived closer to me!

Singing hymns always helped me get through the toddler years with my children. Two of my favorites..Leaning On The Ever Lasting Arms…and What A Friend We Have In Jesus!

  10. Thanks, Janet! And thank you for stopping by to comment.

I know how scarce and precious other writers’ reading time can be so I feel very honored when they choose to spend some time with one of mine.

I really looking forward to the Christmas anthology you and Jillian are doing – I love mail-order bride stories!

  11. LOL, Judy! Actually when they got older,my boys would say, “Mom, don’t sing!”

I’m so glad you enjoyed The Wedding Season! I loved how Louise carried her series into the Regency. If you win the draw, I’ll give you a choice of one of my other backlist books.

  12. Deborah — your novella sounds wonderful! I’m going to have to get it and read it.

  13. I really enjoyed The Wedding Season. I bought it because I had read all of Louise’s books so I wanted to read the next in the series. After reading Much Ado….. I put Deborah on my list of to-read authors and now I have about six of her books to read. I really enjoyed the story!

I think if I had started singing when my boys were babies they would have cried harder 🙂

  14. Thanks for the kind words, Paula!

It is heartbreaking to think of a family losing their babies because they couldn’t feed them all. My great-grandmother was one of a set of triplets but one baby died at birth.

  15. Your story of the twins was touching, I had always thought multiple births must be so great for folks and now you see many times “lots” of babies at one time, it boggles my mind how anyone could raise that many. I have read of a story(true) of a Ky couple in early yrs had 6-7 and they all died because she could not feed that many, no community help in those days. It was so sad to think that they all died for that simple reason, not being fed. I have read your books before and know I will look for this one too, thanks for sharing your talant.

  16. What a blessing your friends were, amk!

This novella is the beginning of a series called “Glass Slipper Brides” about a group of young women who became friends during their childhood in a harsh charity school. Now grown up, they work as governesses and companions and keep in touch by letter. I’ve enjoyed writing about women with that kind of bond!

  17. So glad to hear you came through that tough time, Virginia. I’m sure it strengthened you for any challenges life threw at you after that. Now, if I’m having a difficult time, I look back and remember what God helped me through.

I really enjoy reading Love Inspired books, too! I started reading LIH when the line first started and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to write my own!

  18. Oh wow, Valri — two sets of twins so close together! I can only imagine what a handful that must have been. At least they had experience parenting multiples when the second set came along, but still…

It sounds like they did a great job in spite of the challenges!

  19. God helped give me strength through faithful Christian friends. We shared everything from recipes to good reads. Four of us enjoyed having our children at home with a midwife and the experiences of parenting occurred within a community of love and sharing. My family was far away (in more ways than just miles) so my family in Christ meant so much to me and helped me immensely.

  20. The strength I received was with my second daughter. I had a few suicidal moments because of the chemical inbalance and God was a quiet strength. I just learned that the scripture that states ” the joy of the Lord is your strength”, the word strength is translated , a place of refuge or safety. In the midst of my turmoil , Jesus can be our refuge, our place where we are safe.
I really do enjoy the love inspired books. They hold many lessons and life encouraging moments. Thanks for sharing your heart through them.

  21. This book sounds very interesting! I’d love to read it! I’m glad you survived raising twins! My brother-in-law and his wife had TWO sets of twins — TWO years apart! I don’t know how they did it! They had 4 babies under the age of two – it was a crazy life there for awhile!!! The oldest two just graduated high school and are great boys, so I guess they did a good job!
