Lyn Asks the April Question — 13 Comments

  1. Mary Lynn, I saw the movie when I was in the 8th grade and soon got a paperback and read it to death. I know that the slaves portrayed are not liked by many. But since the ones with names were house servants, they fared better than the others. But still it had an amazing cast of characters.

  2. Yes, one of my favorite books is set in this historical time period, Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women.”

I’d guess books set in this time period are as popular as they are because so many Americans are descended from those who fought on either side or whose ancestors were slaves/slave owners. There’s are personal connections.

  3. I’m a huge history buff and a Patriot, so every part of our country’s history is important to me. The Civil War has so many books and movies written about it, so I’m always up for a story on the era, and even if it’s a work of fiction it better fell true and have their facts inline.

  4. Gone With the Wind. I was given a hardback copy of the book for Christmas, the year I was in eighth grade and read the book so much I actually wore it out. I think the period is interesting because it represents a whole different lifestyle and a time when the United States came close to coming apart.

  5. Very good points, Gail. A civil war is always the worst since it pits people who should be in agreement against each other.

  6. my favourite movie would be Gettysburg. When I went to the USA I did a historical highlights tour. Most was the War of Independence, but we did got to Gettysburg which was a highlight for me. We also visited Hapers Ferry. As for Novels mine would be the Appomattox Series by Gilbert Morris.

  7. I blame my paternal grandfather (who I never met 0- he died long before I was born) and my uncle
for Civil War being a fave era!
Simple: So many people, so many stories; never stop learning something.
There is just something about about willing to fight for a better life that always inspires us.
    Everyone played a part.

    Movies:
    Gettysburg
    Glory

As for books, I actually have both non-fiction and fiction piles. (I’ll stick to CF here)
Stephenia McGee has a stack of Civil War series, including Accidental Spy (with Peggy and Annabelle)
Sandra Merville Hart has some series, including Spies of the Civil War
Jennifer Branson has Civil War Brides
Mary Ellis has Civil War Heroines
Michael Phillips has Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister (YA)
(North & South: Civil War Brides (small # of various authors)

  9. I haven’t read any about the Civil War for many years and I don’t remember any authors or titles. I do love to visit battlegrounds though and can’t wait to move near Gettysburg soon so we can visit again and often. I think that era is so popular because there is so much to draw from; family member against family member, slavery, states rights vs. federal edicts. The lifestyle of the rich plantation owners seemed so romantic. And on top of that, the fighting was all on our soil.
