Lyn Reviews Charlotte MacLeod’s Rest You Merry

booksbylyncote.com Posted on December 22, 2019 by Lyn CoteDecember 22, 2019

Rest You Merry (Peter Shandy, #1)Rest You Merry by Charlotte MacLeod
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first Peter Shandy book I’ve read. WHAT A HOOT! I loved this book and so did my dh. I bought it because it said that it was a combination of Agatha Christie and P G Wodehouse–two of my favorite authors. And it was. A great mystery ala Christie tradition. And both erudite and slapstick humor ala Wodehouse (remember Bertie Wooster and Jeeves?–Well if you don’t, get to the library and check one out.)

The setting is New England, a small agricultural college. Since my dh pointed out that no one mentioned cell phones and the phones all had dials, that this was a pre-1990’s era book. I’d say around the 1960-70’s but it fits the characters. AND WHAT CHARACTERS THEY ARE! Somehow realistic and over the top at the same time. And I loved the dawning romance between Peter and the librarian Helen Marsh. If you want a mystery that is hard to solve and a fun holiday read, this book is for you! (Note: there is a very little profanity in the dialogue-I chose to overlook it.)

First Time on Sale for 99 Cents, The Heart Hopes

booksbylyncote.com Posted on December 1, 2019 by Lyn CoteDecember 1, 2019

The Heart Hopes

What could unite a disgruntled DA and the pretty teacher, responsible for his hung jury?

Perhaps a little boy in need of love

Young and eager, Patience begins her first year of teaching. One first grader, Jackson, sparks her concern. Can she help him start off his school years on the right foot?. A stint of jury duty takes her away from Jackson, and into conflict with Jackson’s dad, by-the-book DA Gil Montgomery. Her “not guilty” vote means he’ll have to try the case again. And she’s upset that her absence had badly affected Jackson, now branded the “class troublemaker,” just what she was trying to prevent.

Gil and his ex-wife’s conflicting parenting styles continue to jeopardize Jackson’s emotional well-being. As irritated as Gil is with Patience, he soon realizes she is the key to helping his son. Patience is willing to help. But is Gil willing to “hear” her as she uncovers evidence for the re-trial that could change his mind about who assaulted Bertha Perkins and stole her valuable antiques?

Share Your Christmas Blessing

booksbylyncote.com Posted on November 16, 2019 by Lyn CoteNovember 11, 2019

I’l like to share my Christmas blessing.

My husband and I moved to the northwoods of WI in the early 2000’s. On the first Christmas morning I witnessed something called sublimation. Not psychologically but in chemistry. Here’s what I mean.

I was standing at the kitchen window and looked out and I saw what looked like snow but special snow I’d never seen before. And the sun was shining brightly–not a cloud in the clear blue sky. Where could snow come from without clouds?  And it was the most beautiful snow I’d ever seen–like cascades of crushed diamonds–veils of them coming down in shimmering waves. I was transfixed. And when the blessing finally ended, the snowy ground glittered like a field of diamonds. I was uplifted, filled with joy. And this happened again on another Christmas morning. Twice–I was amazed.

My husband explained sublimation. Here’s the dictionary definition.

Chemistry.–to convert (a solid substance) by heat into a vapor, which on cooling condenses again to solid form, without apparent liquefaction.

He explained to me that the vapor was being translated into solid form–snow–without becoming liquid first.

Since it happened twice and both times on Christmas morning, i took it as a special gift from God–for all of us who witnessed it. Have you ever experienced a special blessing like this at Christmas? It doesn’t have to be from nature but from another person. Please share here. I will love hearing your special blessings. And will be giving a free ebook to a few randomly chosen commenters. And here’s a Christmas special for you. Loving Winter is on sale for 99 cents till November 26th!

Happily single, Winter Woodard is looking forward to a busy, fun fall and holiday season.  Clay Dixon, the very successful football coach at the local high school, has rebuffed all offers of “home-cooked meals,” keeping the female population at bay.

Then bad things begin to happen. And unexpectedly Clay Dixon stands by her through a holiday season fraught with unnerving and destructive setbacks. Welcome to Steadfast, a small town whose people and mysteries you may never forget~

Where Do You Buy Your Print Books?

booksbylyncote.com Posted on October 21, 2019 by Lyn CoteOctober 16, 2019
Unexpected Destinations

Unexpected DestinationsWeeks ago I asked the question: Do you prefer print or ebooks. I received many replies to my newsletter and a few here. If you’d like to read them or add one, here’s the link to that blog. And here’s my reply to those who responded.

I appreciate your responses. But I need to let you in on why ebooks are so plentiful and print books are less available. In 2007 Amazon released the first Kindle. And not long after that happened, the Borders and Waldenbook stores that had been in nearly every mall in the US folded. Take a moment and think about how that impacted publishers and authors. They lost HUGE amounts of selling space. Since then, Barnes & Noble has been near bankruptcy and has shut many stores and has reduced the bookshelf space in favor of toys, etc. Walmart is another major bookstore and it has also begun to reduce the space it holds for book sales. So authors and publishers have moved to ebooks which don’t take up physical shelf space in a store. I don’t expect this trend to change. Market forces are at work. So now you know–the rest of the story.

My November Question is related to my reply to the opinions.

If you prefer print, would you buy print books through amazon.com? You see it would cost me about double to upload my books in print form onto Amazon.com. I need to know if it would be worth it. After all, I want my readers to read my books in the form they prefer, but I’m also living on my writing income. You see my dilemma. So what’s your reply?–Lyn

PS-The book above is one that I have published in both ebook and print. For more info, click here.

Lyn Reviews Samantha Price’s Amish Scarecrow Murders

booksbylyncote.com Posted on October 14, 2019 by Lyn CoteOctober 18, 2019

Amish Scarecrow Murders: Cozy Mystery (Ettie Smith Amish Mysteries Book 20)Amish Scarecrow Murders: Cozy Mystery by Samantha Price
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first Smantha Price book. I bought it because the title intrigued me. I liked the characters and the story line kept me interested. A series of murders from the past–is someone mimicking them OR has the original murderer started again? I thought the idea of two elderly sister slueths was good but I wish the sisters’ dialogue had been more character-driven. I couldn’t tell the two sisters’ dialogue apart just by hearing it. That’s my only reservation. A solid intriguing mystery.
