I Remember Mama

booksbylyncote.com Posted on April 29, 2019 by Lyn CoteApril 29, 2019
4 generations of Baker Family

4 generations of Baker FamilyWe’re heading into May, the month we celebrate our Mother’s. I’m going to share a memory of my mother and would you like to share one too? Please do! I will feature some in my late May newsletter and do a drawing for Kindle gift codes for some of my ebooks to a few random winners.

In the photo above, you see my grandfather, his mother (seated) holding my first cousin Marilyn and behind, her mother my aunt. I don’t have any photos of my mother digitized. I must do that soon. But this is her father and sister and gradmother. I never met my great-grandmother but the other three I knew. Family is so important and sometimes so difficult–you know what i mean!

Now a fond story of my complex mother. I must have been around 10 years old. That spring I found a baby robin sitting featherless in its broken shell on the ground. The destroyed nest lying nearby. I looked around and saw no other bird. I quickly cradled the little robin in my hand an ran home. Of course, my mother had a bird cage in the basement and soon Billy Boy (named by Mama) was in the cage. Mama fed him bread soaked in milk–probably not what a biologist would have suggested.

But Billy Boy survived and thrived on it as Mama fed him around the clock. When the time came, Mama took him out to the clothesline pole (remember those?) and sat him on it and before long he was coasting down to a landing and then he flew!

For the next three years Billy Boy returned to that clothesline every spring and would sing there until Mama came out to “talk” to him. Then the fourth spring he didn’t return. Sad but Billy Boy had three good years and no doubt a story to share with other robins along his way. I could tell you many more stories about my mother’s love for all animals and how she was their friend. She taught me much. I remember Mama. What about yours?–Lyn

Lyn Reviews Sofie Kelly’s Copycat Killing

booksbylyncote.com Posted on April 15, 2019 by Lyn CoteFebruary 25, 2019

Copycat Killing (A Magical Cats Mystery, #3)Copycat Killing by Sofie Kelly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first Sofie Kelly mystery I’ve read and I will definitely read more of hers. The setting is a small town in Minnesota, which seems to be a popular locale for cozy mysteries. Who knows why? ‘-) Anyway the spring storms have filled the basement of the community art co-op and everyone is trying to deal with the local flooding. Our heroine, the librarian Kathleen, is also involved in caring for a colony of feral cats that have been housed in an old house outside of town.

In the course of this, she manages to step in just the wrong place outside and ends up dislodging most of a slope behind the house and ALSO A SKELETON. I’m really happy I don’t go around finding dead bodies or skeletons, but of course, no mystery without a body, right? ‘-) The hero is the local detective Marcus and I liked him. And so does Kathleen! The Magical Cats aspect was fine. I think Ms. Kelly did a good job giving the cats personalities, yet leaving them as real cats.

Of course, Lilian Jackson Braun’s The Cat Who series started the bent of cats in mysteries. If you haven’t read them, you’re missing a great series–5 star. Anyway if you enjoy a cozy mystery with lively characters and a plot full of unexpected twists, go ahead and try this one!-Lyn Cote

Lyn Reviews Rhys Bowen’s Twelve Clues of Christmas

booksbylyncote.com Posted on April 1, 2019 by Lyn CoteMarch 20, 2019

The Twelve Clues of Christmas (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #6)The Twelve Clues of Christmas by Rhys Bowen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first Rhys Bowen mystery. I LOVED IT! It’s a historical set in the 1930’s,one of my favorite eras. Remember THE THIN MAN movies? The heroine is 33rd in line to the throne but is impovrished after the 1929 crash. Great period piece and a “novel” mystery idea. If you love wit and historical detail and a good mystery, try it!

Lyn Asks Do Opposites Attract?

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 25, 2019 by Lyn CoteMarch 20, 2019

My upcoming book, Only Her Heart, starts a series titled: “Opposites Attract.” So that kicks off this April’s question–Do you think that’s true?

In Only Her Heart, Annie and Jack are true opposites. Here’s the tagline for the book.

What will it take for a clueless computer genius to notice the loving woman at the desk beside him?

And the tagline for the series:

Four unlikely couples find opposites do attract even in the shadow of mystery~

Do you know a couple that are obviously in this category–opposites?

I do. In fact, my husband and I are the prototypes for the well-organized take-charge woman of words and the quiet man who thinks in numbers. No one would have put us together, and we have celebrated over thirty years together.

HOWEVER~

Was it true of you and your husband or sweetheart or did it go very wrong?

As usual, I will be randomly drawing a few commenters to receive a free Kindle ebook. So please share!-Lyn

Lyn Reviews Angela C Castillo’s Secondhand Secrets

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 11, 2019 by Lyn CoteMarch 3, 2019

Secondhand Secrets (Miss Main Street #1)Secondhand Secrets by Angela C. Castillo
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have never read an Angela Castillo book before and was pleasantly surprised. So many of these books that have the young woman moving away from the big city to the small town of her family are cookie-cutter. This book was not. The heroine was believable and fresh as was her hero. The small town of Wimber, TX also developed as a distinct “personality” and the many other shop owners were varied and quirky but again believable. I enjoyed the “villainess”, the nosey Vera and the plot of the hidden “treasure.” So I recommend this book to those who enjoy a sweet romance with an interesting mystery.

Lyn Reviews R. Allen Chappell’s Navajo Autumn

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 7, 2019 by Lyn CoteMarch 9, 2019

Navajo Autumn (A Navajo Nation Mystery #1)Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was always a fan of Tony Hillerman. It was with a little hesitance that I downloaded this book but I was happy I did. The setting of the Navajo Reservation was familiar but this wasn’t a pale imitation. Without copying Hillerman’s style or characters, this book had the same authentic “feel.” The characters were definitely Navajo but also human with very real flaws and strengths. The plot was also sound and I liked that it ended on a hopeful note. Justice had been done. The cosmic balance restored with the defeat of evil.
