Lyn Reviews Zara Keane’s To Hatch a Thief

booksbylyncote.com Posted on September 21, 2018 by Lyn CoteSeptember 19, 2018

To Hatch a Thief (Movie Club Mysteries #1.5)To Hatch a Thief by Zara Keane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another delightful gem from Zara Keane! I love Whisper Island, Ireland–where else would the county club want chickens dressed like leprechauns to dance for them on Valentine’s Day??? What a hoot!
Of course there has to be a mystery–how about a missing diamond necklace? And you will NEVER GUESS where it’s finally found!
Great characters–great mysteries–great fun!
This is just a novella, but a delightful one! And only 99 cents!–Lyn

Lyn Reviews Robin Lee Hatcher’s You’ll Think of Me

booksbylyncote.com Posted on September 10, 2018 by Lyn CoteSeptember 10, 2018

You'll Think of Me (Thunder Creek #1)

You’ll Think of Me by Robin Lee Hatcher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I always enjoy Robin Lee Hatcher’s contemporary romances set in her native Idaho. This is such a sweet story of two hearts that need mending and a little girl who deserves a father’s love.

I love the small town atmosphere Robin creates (Yes, I know RLH-and I received this book for review but it’s my honest opinion.). Two characters, however, are hard to understand: Brooklyn’s father who would rather nurse a grudge and wallow in bitterness that love a daughter and granddaughter.

He’s kind of a poster child for how not to handle rejection. I kept wondering why Brooklyn’s mother left him–was he already a bitter man and that sent her on her way? And I always have trouble understanding a mother who will abandon her child. I know that has become more common but that does not speak well of the direction our society is moving. I’m sure the women who worked to gain women the vote and other rights never included the right to abandon children. But I digress.

The other character that was never explained to me was Brooklyn’s first husband. Why did he feel the need to run away with Brooklyn as a teen and then abandon her after they eloped? That secret is never revealed.

However this mystery and the bitter man did not ruin my enjoyment of this sweet mountain romance. If you pick it up and read it, you will be glad you did. I was!–Lyn

Lyn Reviews Marta Perry’s The Wedding Quilt Bride

booksbylyncote.com Posted on August 26, 2018 by Lyn CoteAugust 26, 2018
Marta Perry

The Wedding Quilt Bride (Brides of Lost Creek #2)The Wedding Quilt Bride by Marta Perry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I must first say that Marta Perry is a very dear friend; however, that doesn’t mean I can’t write an honest review of her work. If I didn’t like her books, I wouldn’t review them. BUT I ALWAYS LIKE HER BOOKS! And this one is no exception. Her characters are primarily Amish of course in this story but they could have been anyone.

The conflict revolves around their pasts and what they “think” is true. Which turns out not to be as true as they thought. 🙂 Rebecca married in haste and has an unhappiness she won’t-can’t reveal and Daniel also carries false ideas. Fortunately God keeps pushing them out of their “comfort” areas (don’t think Amish have zones.’-) Anyway a sweet spirit-filled romance I enjoyed A LOT!

Lyn Reviews Gretchen Sprague’s Murder in a Heat Wave

booksbylyncote.com Posted on August 17, 2018 by Lyn CoteAugust 16, 2018

Murder in a Heat Wave (Martha Patterson, #3)Murder in a Heat Wave by Gretchen Sprague
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wandering through a local second-hand bookstore which was closing (Sigh…), I noticed this book and picked it up–intrigued by the title. I read the blurb and the first page and decided to buy if for 50 cents. After I read it, I was sorry, I hadn’t picked up the other two titles in the series. And looking Gretchen up online, I discovered that she died suddenly around 2004 and that was the end of her mysteries. That’s a lesson to all authors–WRITE FAST. None of us know how many books we will be able to finish. (I am taking my own advice. 🙂

ANYWAY- back to the book–I loved Martha Patterson, the amateur sleuth. I’ve never been to NYC but she made me comfortable in Greenwich Village, Her Village as she terms it. She drew me in with artful and convincing characters–all angry at the coop board –in the midst of one of those infrequent heat waves–THE AIR-CON broken at the worst of wrong times.

Then the head of the coop board is found dead in the apt next to Martha’s. And everyone wants to confide something in Martha–a calm, efficient retired lawyer. And of course, Martha discovers who the murderer is.

I like the steady pace of the mystery–not too fast, not too slow. And the tension was to my taste. I’m not into thrillers but I enjoy an interesting mystery with a competent sleuth with a supporting cast of intriguing suspects. Well done, Gretchen. Sorry we lost you too soon–Lyn Cote
