Lyn Reviews Gretchen Sprague’s Murder in a Heat Wave

booksbylyncote.com Posted on August 17, 2018 by Lyn CoteAugust 16, 2018

Murder in a Heat Wave (Martha Patterson, #3)Murder in a Heat Wave by Gretchen Sprague
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wandering through a local second-hand bookstore which was closing (Sigh…), I noticed this book and picked it up–intrigued by the title. I read the blurb and the first page and decided to buy if for 50 cents. After I read it, I was sorry, I hadn’t picked up the other two titles in the series. And looking Gretchen up online, I discovered that she died suddenly around 2004 and that was the end of her mysteries. That’s a lesson to all authors–WRITE FAST. None of us know how many books we will be able to finish. (I am taking my own advice. 🙂

ANYWAY- back to the book–I loved Martha Patterson, the amateur sleuth. I’ve never been to NYC but she made me comfortable in Greenwich Village, Her Village as she terms it. She drew me in with artful and convincing characters–all angry at the coop board –in the midst of one of those infrequent heat waves–THE AIR-CON broken at the worst of wrong times.

Then the head of the coop board is found dead in the apt next to Martha’s. And everyone wants to confide something in Martha–a calm, efficient retired lawyer. And of course, Martha discovers who the murderer is.

I like the steady pace of the mystery–not too fast, not too slow. And the tension was to my taste. I’m not into thrillers but I enjoy an interesting mystery with a competent sleuth with a supporting cast of intriguing suspects. Well done, Gretchen. Sorry we lost you too soon–Lyn Cote

Need Comments for Another Cover Model or Four! #1

booksbylyncote.com Posted on July 16, 2018 by Lyn CoteJuly 16, 2018
Cover model 1

I have another newer historical series coming out this fall. Yippee!

And of course, I need help choosing the most evocative model for each cover.

“The Carlyle Women” is a family saga of four generations in one family from the start to near the end of the 20th century. Each heroine and hence each model will reflect the period that she lives in. They are: 1920’s, 1930-40’s, 1960-80’s and 1990.

As usual I’ve done the spade work and have a choice of 3 or so for each. Please vote here on my blog or Facebook page. As usual each cover will reward one commenter with a $10 amazon gift card in four random drawings one for each–such a deal!!

Lyn Reviews Dame Agatha Christies’ MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

booksbylyncote.com Posted on June 16, 2018 by Lyn CoteJune 16, 2018
new-years-eve-dawn

Murder on the Orient Express and Other Hercule Poirot MysteriesMurder on the Orient Express and Other Hercule Poirot Mysteries by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been an avid Agatha Christie fan since –FOREVER. So this is not the first time I’ve read MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. However, I never tire of Dame Agatha’s intricate plots, her detective Hercule Poirot and the interesting locales she sometimes chooses for her mysteries. Of course, she was personally very acquainted with this train since she traveled on it many times with her archeologist husband. They’ve just made another movie of it, showing that people haven’t tired of her story.

I’d like to take this opportunity to scold the BBC for messing with Dame Agatha’s Jane Marple mysteries on Masterpiece Mystery. UGH UGH UGH. How dare they change the stories??? What demented scriptwriter thought he could change the beloved mysteries? I’d like to get the executive that made the DEPLORABLE decision in a room alone! (I must calm myself–getting heated here!)

Anyway don’t watch the icky rewrites–I watched two and then started to gag. Joan Hickson did the last “honorable” productions of Miss Jane Marple, another of Agatha’s detectives, my favorite.

So there you have my review and MY RANT!–:Lyn Cote

Lyn Reviews Kathryn Springer’s The Bachelor’s Perfect Match

booksbylyncote.com Posted on June 3, 2018 by Lyn CoteJune 3, 2018
Spring's Storm

The Bachelor’s Perfect Match by Kathryn Springer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am a friend of Kathryn Springer’s but I started reading and loving her books before I met her! She writes a lovely book. Her books aren’t non-stop thrillers but gentle sweet romances with characters that I immediately care about. The librarian heroine vs. the adventurous hero, laid up after an accident are wonderful believable characters.

I like that Kathryn brought 3 teens who needed help into the story–giving both the hero and heroine of the story a chance to show themselves in action. Too often Harlequin only wants LITTLE children in their books–why not teens? Especially since so many teens read Love Inspired Romances!

I loved the setting of the UP of MI–just north of my hometown. The author gave me a copy of her latest book, but this is my honest opinion!–Lyn Cote
