New Flash Fiction #1 The Northwoods Story Begins!

booksbylyncote.com Posted on February 9, 2015 by Lyn CoteFebruary 10, 2015

Winter lake

Today I’m offering another original flash fiction. I’m using this to help me work on a new novella, set in my home state, Wisconsin. It follows my novella, “For Sophia’s Heart.” So consider this scene one…or thereabouts. What do you think? I’M NOT GETTING MUCH ENCOURAGEMENT–IF YOU WANT MORE OF THIS STORY, I NEED SOME! Leave a comment so I know if I’m going in the right direction. Pretty please!0

New Face in the Logging Camp

by Lyn Cote

“He’s just a boy,” Beau Moore objected mildly. “He can’t lift that log. It must be near two feet across.”

Surrounded by towering pines, oaks and maples, the logging crew was working deep in the heart of the snowy far northwoods of Wisconsin in the year of our Lord 1903.  In bright sunshine from a true-blue sky, the cold temperature nipped Beau’s nose. But after swinging the axe for an hour, he’d already shed his wool jacket and hung it on a low branch.

The crew boss had just ordered one of the young logging camp boys who did odd jobs to pick up one of the seasoned firewood logs on the wagon and split it for the cookfire.

“If the kid can’t do the job, he can go back to where he came from,” the crew boss growled back at Beau, then turned away.

The boy looked scared.

“Come with me, boy.” Beau hefted the log onto his shoulder and strode over toward the wagon where the cook was keeping coffee hot for the men and making venison stew for their noon meal.

“Thanks,” the boy said, running beside him to keep up with Beau’s long legs.

“You’re new. What’s your name?” Beau asked, setting the log on end, positioning it for cutting.

“Delaney.”

The boy’s voice hadn’t even changed yet.

“Thanks,” the boy mumbled, facing the log to split. He picked up a smaller ax and took aim at the log. He sunk the ax in but couldn’t draw it out again.

Beau turned back. Without a word, he stepped behind the kid and put an arm on both sides of the boy’s. He closed his hands over the boy’s smaller ones and wrenched the ax from the log. Then he lifted the ax, still with the boy’s hands within his, and slammed the ax blade through the log, splitting it in two.

“Thanks,” Delaney said again, shying away from Beau. “I can do it by myself now.”

The boy’s insistence and pride amused Beau. “I know you can. That was a big one though.”

“Yes, sir.” Delaney reset the log and deftly split the half log into two.

“You don’t need to call me sir. I’m just Beau.”

The boy bobbed his head and pushed one strand of his too long dirty blond hair around his ear.

“Hurry up, boy,” the cook said. “Don’t want this fire to go out.”

Hearing the boss bellowing his name in the distance, Beau strode away, not worried about the man’s temper. The crew boss knew the secret of who Beau was and he wouldn’t fire him.

Then something came to mind–the way the boy had tucked that strand of hair behind his ear. Why did that make Beau think of his sister Anne?

Lyn Reviews Robin Lee Hatcher’s Love Without End

After reading the review, look for the QUESTION to answer to enter a drawing for my copy.
Love Without End (Kings Meadow Romance, #2)Love Without End by Robin Lee Hatcher

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I truly enjoyed Love Without End. This, another book in the King’s Meadow romance series, entwines two beautiful and heartfelt romances–one in the past and one in the present. Together they make this a special read. I’m so glad Robin wrote a love story for Chet who suffered so much in A Promise Kept (January 2014). Kimberly, so wrong for him, becomes so right. Not your run-of-the-mill cowboy romance–enriched with deft writing and deep emotion.

Author Jessica Keller & The Fireman’s Secret

booksbylyncote.com Posted on February 2, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 31, 2015

Jessica Keller

My guest today is Love Inspired author Jessica Keller. She is offering a giveaway of her latest book so be sure to leave a comment. Now she’s going to introduce you to her latest heroine. Here’s Jessica.

My latest release from Love Inspired, The Fireman’s Secret, centers around two people who are both hiding something. The Goose Harbor heroine, Shelby Beck, was trapped in a fire as a teenager when the church mysteriously burned down and carries scars from the burns on her arms, legs, and back. She hides these by wearing long sleeves and long pants year round. As an adult, Shelby acquires the land that the church used to be on and plans to rebuild it because she believes her healing is tied the church’s rebuilding.

When Joel Palermo, who spent three years in foster care as a teen in Goose Harbor before he ran away, returns to town as a fireman, Shelby reconnects with him right away. But she struggles with how close she should let him get since she knows the relationship can’t last. She usually ends dating relationships before a man can learn about her scars and reject her.

Because of everything Shelby has been through in her life she’s incredibly compassionate and has empathy for those in need. This comes through especially in her desire to save elderly dogs from being euthanized in dog pounds because they aren’t being adopted. She also reaches out to Joel from the get-go because she remembers he had a troubled childhood and was never adopted.

Sometime the strongest and bravest thing a person can do is realize that, even in a damaged state, they are worthy of being loved and they are capable of loving others as-is. Shelby’s compassionate nature is put to the test when she discovers– The Fireman’s Secret.”–Jessica

Author Mary Moore & To Rake or Not to Rake

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 28, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 27, 2015

Mary-14 Color Blue w scarf - No!

My guest today is Love Inspired Historical author Mary Moore. She writes Regency Romance, something I love to read. She is offering a book giveaway of her latest title, Accidental Fiancee. Here’s Mary:

Accidental Fiancée is my new Regency release and I wanted to talk to you about Lady Grace Endicott, my heroine.

A Rake?

I have wanted to do a story about a rake for a long time, but feared the attempt while writing for an inspirational publisher. So I looked back at my favorite author of all time, Georgette Heyer. She has some really wonderful rakes without any of the racy scenes we would expect today in such a story. Hence I knew it could be done.

Ala Georgette Heyer

My agent and my editor both okay-ed the submission for the story about the bad boy in Town who was rich, wealthy and able to do as he pleased. But without giving too much away, underneath he was not as bad as he was painted.

Lady Grace Endicott

My favorite part of the book, however, is Lady Grace Endicott. A rich, handsome, n’er-do-well can very easily take over the story. But I wanted my heroine to be able give as good as she got, be as strong and independent as her rake, and most importantly, keep her faith always in the forefront no matter what the circumstances.

The Regency period is an era where the very rich cared only about being seen and what they wore or how much a man’s horses cost. Going to church was something many of the rich did, however, it was just an obligation and lasted until the end of the service and went no farther.

Accidental Fiancee

To purchase, click here. Accidental Fiancee (Love Inspired Historical)

Feisty, funny, and focused

But Lady Grace doesn’t hide her beliefs or give up easily. She quickly recognizes the apathy of those in their social circles and determines to be a force for good in the slums surrounding the posh riches of the upper classes. That she does so makes her different than any other woman of Lord Weston’s acquaintance and he very soon becomes involved in Grace’s attempts to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.  Lady Grace is feisty, funny, and focused on her family. The theme of grace permeates the story as she shows her hero that God’s grace is free in spite of his past.”–Mary

I think I would love to read this! How about you? QUESTION: Do you enjoy Regency Romance? Have you ever read a Georgette Heyer Regency? I just reread Black Sheep where Lady Abigail Wendover falls in love with Miles Caverleigh, a black sheep–love that story.

Author Ann Tatlock Steps Out of Time & Book Giveaway

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 26, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 25, 2015
Ann Tatlock

My guest today is author Ann Tatlock. She is going to tell us about her unusual story, a mix of reality and fantasy. I hope you will leave a comment in reply to the QUESTION at the end to be entered into the drawing for a copy of Once Beyond  a Time. Here’s Ann as she Steps Out of Time:

Meg Crane is a woman with an all-too-common problem:

her husband has had an affair. But when Sheldon Crane resigns his position as a pastor and moves his family to a small mountain town in North Carolina, Meg finds herself facing a situation no one has ever faced before: she discovers their house is a place where all of time is happening at once. Meg and her family are able to talk with people who have lived in the house in the past and others who will live in the house in the future.
As Meg wrestles with the choice of forgiving her husband or leaving him (daughter Linda thinks she’s weak for not divorcing him and moving on), she is both comforted and challenged by a woman who lives in the house almost forty years in the future. Celeste encourages her to forgive; Meg promises to try.

Then the unthinkable happens.

The Crane’s eight-year-old son disappears. No one knows whether he has been kidnapped or whether he simply wandered off into the mountains and got lost. With heartache upon heartache, Meg must turn to a God whom she has never really known how to trust.

God’s Timelessness

I was inspired to write Once Beyond A Time as I considered God’s timelessness. As Revelation 1:8 says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” (KJV).
Unlike humans who occupy a single point in time, God stretches from start to finish, he is and was and is to come, and therefore he is the Eternal Now. He created time for our use, but he remains outside of it and is unhindered by it. So, I wondered, what if one was able to “fall out of time” and experience what God experiences?
I hope you will come and experience for yourself Meg’s unusual story in which she finds the strength to surrender her hurts and doubts in order to trust the sovereignty of a timeless God.”–Ann

Author Leann Harris & Forgiving the Unforgivable

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 21, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 21, 2015

Leann Harris

My guest today is Love Inspired author Leann Harris. She is offering two copies of her latest independent book The Last Truth. Please remember to leave a comment to enter the drawing. Here’s Leann:

“How can you forgive the unforgivable? The heroine of my newest book, The Last Truth has to travel that road.

During WWII

During WWII Churchill set up Special Operations Executive to send spies into occupied Europe to help fight against the Nazis. The spies–both men and women–were dropped into an occupied country to work with the local resistance and contact London with their information. When I learned about SOE, a story started to rumble around in my head.

Corrie Ten Boom

Then I read about Corrie Ten Boom speaking in a German church about forgiveness. One of the camp guards who had participated in the horrors where she was imprisoned walked up to the front of the church after the service and asked for forgiveness. She had to put into action what she’d just preached about.

Those threads came together thus was born the story The Last Truth.

The Story

My heroine Linette Van Linder’s family is betrayed by her fiancé to the Nazis for hiding her father’s Jewish partner. Linette escapes and runs into an American reporter. The only way Michael St. John can get Linette out of Amsterdam is to marry her to get the visa. She joins the SOE and he the US Army. Thus begins Linette’s and Michael’s journey through the war.

After the war, Linette tells herself she wants justice for the dead, but does she want justice or revenge on the man who turned her family in?”–Leann

Last Truth

This sounds like a book that asks the hard questions. Remember to leave a comment to enter the drawing for one of the 2 copies of The Last Truth. You can request whether you want and ebook for print.

Lyn Reviews Gail Gaymer Martin’s The Firefighter’s New Family

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 19, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 19, 2015

This post includes a book giveaway, so don’t miss the question below!

The Firefighter's New Family (Sisters #2)The Firefighter’s New Family by Gail Gaymer Martin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Again Gail Martin is a very dear friend, but that doesn’t mean I can’t read, enjoy and review her books sincerely. 🙂

Again this isn’t the first of her books I’ve read either. Gail and I were unpublished together and I relish seeing how much she had accomplished and the good stories she has given her MANY readers.

The impetus that drives this story is the two main characters: Devon and Ashley. Devon is the firefighter of the title and Ashley is his neighbor. Both characters are immediately likeable and sympathetic–meaning I cared about them in the very first scene.

Both however have “baggage.” She lost her husband in Afghanistan and he lost his wife to depression and both have young children.

So if you like stories about good people dealing honestly with hard problems, you will appreciate this story! Well done, Gail!

Author Merrillee Whren & Second Chance Reunion

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 14, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 12, 2015

Merrillee Whren

My guest today is Love Inspired Author Merrillee Whren who is taking this opportunity to share about her new book, Second Chance Reunion, and an outreach, Teen Challenge, Home of Hope. Merrillee will be giving away a copy of her newest to a commenter so be sure to read the QUESTION below. Here’s Merrillee:

“My latest book for Love Inspired Romance, SECOND CHANCE REUNION, is the story of Annie Payton, a recovering substance abuser. She comes to the Village of Hope with dreams of being reunited with her children after spending a year in a rehab facility. The inspiration for this story came from my contact with several ministries, including City Square in Dallas, Texas, Christian City near Atlanta, Georgia, Cookson Hills Christian Ministries in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Teen Challenge of Arizona.

Today I’d like to focus on a women’s ministry of Teen Challenge, Home of Hope. This ministry seeks to help women and women with children who are addicted to drugs or alcohol or both. The ministry gives them hope by helping them have a relationship with Jesus, who can restore lives, heal broken hearts, and give joy to those who have lost everything to addiction.

The Home of Hope is part of the Teen Challenge ministry, started by David Wilkerson over fifty years ago in Brooklyn, New York, to help teen gang members. Eventually, this ministry expanded to help those addicted to drugs and alcohol. The Home of Hope is one of many rehabilitation centers started across the country after the success of the year-long residential discipleship program in Brooklyn.

The programs offered at Home of Hope emphasize discipline and provide Bible study, work assignments, and recreation. The five primary phases the participants of the program must complete during their stay are: basic educational presentation, interview, induction, training and re-entry.

You can learn more about these ministries and listen to testimonies of changed lives by clicking on the hyperlinks in the post. You will learn about women who realized their need for help and took the steps to find it. Let their stories inspire you.

My heroine, Annie Payton, comes out of rehab ready to face the future and put aside troubles from her past. Here’s a blurb from SECOND CHANCE REUNION.

Annie Payton’s lost everything she once held dear. The Village of Hope is her last chance to rebuild the life she’s frittered away so needlessly. But as she works to regain custody of her children, she never imagines an unlikely advocate in her corner—ex-husband Ian Montgomery. Ian’s always willing to help those down on their luck, but his ex-wife’s a different story. Her past betrayal is still a painful memory. As the Village’s lawyer, he’ll represent her—but that’s as far as he’ll allow his feelings to go. Can Annie show Ian that she’s changed in every way but one—the love she still has for him?

VILLAGE OF HOPE: A community built on love.”–Merrillee

Lyn Talks Flash Fiction & Asks to Beard or Not to Beard?

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 12, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 11, 2015

Friends, I need opinions and will be giving an ebook away to a commenter.

I am in the process of writing the last book in my “Quaker Brides” series. The first book Honor debuted last September.

Honor web friendly

And the next book, Blessing, will be released this coming July.

Blessing

And I also self-published “Where Honor Began,” the novelette which is a prequel to Honor in November.

WhereHonorBegan-1

But authors are always mentally working on the next project. My novella, “For Sophia’s Heart,” has been a reader-favorite for several years

For Sophia's Heart

And many have requested more of Sophia. I’m planning on writing a new novella about one of Sophia’s brothers and then one about Sophia’s daughter to round out this family saga set at the turn of the twentieth century in the far northwoods of Wisconsin.

I think that I am going to use this setting for the flash fiction I intend to write here on my blog. If you recall, flash fiction is a VERY short story. And I am going to use this setting to begin to create the people who live in the northwoods in a logging area around 1900. What do you think?

And I need you to give me your honest opinion. In this setting and time period will be a lot of lumberjacks and trappers and I need to know–

QUESTION: Do you object to or like heroes with beards? Leave a comment and I’ll enter you into a drawing for an ecopy of “For Sophia’s Heart.”–Lyn

Lyn Reviews Lenora Worth’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas

booksbylyncote.com Posted on January 7, 2015 by Lyn CoteJanuary 6, 2015

Hope you’re not completely tired of Christmas–it’s still wintry here! (BOOK GIVEAWAY)

I'll Be Home for ChristmasI’ll Be Home for Christmas by Lenora Worth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lenora Worth is a friend but that doesn’t mean I can’t like her books! 🙂 I enjoyed this book twice. I read it when it came out originally in 1998 and then picked up a newly reissued larger print version and read it again.

I enjoyed it both times!

Lenora writes a vivid story with interesting and involving characters. I loved the single mom on hard times who takes on a self-sufficient playboy and opens his eyes to the real issues of life, healing and faith.

This book is one of Lenora’s early Love Inspired Romances but it’s easy to see why she is now a New York Times best-selling author1
