FAITH, Meet Her Hero, Col Devlin Knight

booksbylyncote.com Posted on April 4, 2016 by Lyn CoteApril 4, 2016
FAITH

FAITH

Today I am posting an excerpt of my latest book FAITH. Last Friday I posted the Prologue where we witness why Faith goes to serve in the Civil War–though the doctors at that time didn’t want or respect female nurses. But what of her counterpart?

Let me introduce Col Devlin Knight of Maryland. If you recall, the border states were slave stares that refused to secede but also wanted to keep their slaves. This is Dev’s conflict. He’s a slaveowner fighting for the Union and now the Emancipation Proclamation has made it clear that Union victory will mean emancipation. He is a man torn between two opposites. How can he go forward in a much different future?

Chapter One begins with Dev, a Union cavalry officer, engaged in a skirmish in Mississippi near Vicksburg. And in the midst he sees on the other side, his own cousin Jack. What’s a man of honor to do when he sees his “blood” fall?

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter One:

After shoving Jack’s distinctive hat with one side folded up and pinned with a miniature lone-star flag into his jacket, Dev slid one arm under Jack’s shoulders and one under his knees and rose. Jack struggled, cursed and then passed out.

Just as well. Dev managed to sling him face down over his saddle and then he mounted his horse, grasping his reins and turned away to head back to the Union lines.

“Stop where you stand,” a voice from the trees behind Dev barked.

Dev raised both hands. “I’m taking my cousin with me to get him medical help.”

“Your cousin, Yankee?”

“Yes, we’re from Maryland.”

“That man’s from Texas.”

“Yes, but he was born in Maryland on the Carroll Plantation ten miles from Baltimore.”

“So you do know him.”

“Yes, now are you going to shoot me in the back or let me help my cousin?”

“So you’ll shoot at him but then come back to help him?”

“That sums it up.” Dev choked on the irony of it, but he’d faced this over and over, meeting men he’d grown up with and taking aim at them.

An ominous silence hung over the three of them.

“Okay. But God help you if you do him harm.”

“God help me in any event.” But he doubted God would help him. Dev headed back to his camp, expecting to be shot by a sniper or Rebel straggler at any moment.

He’d fought in the Mexican War nearly twenty years ago and his goal then had been to serve with honor and survive. He didn’t think any man could expect to live through two wars. His lone goal now was to serve and when the time came, die with honor. That’s what kept him going.

***

When Dev neared his camp, his cut off his cousin’s gray military jacket and stuffed it along with Jack’s hat under his own jacket. He met the sentry, identified himself. Then as he picked his way to his tent, he felt conspicuous as if he’d be stopped at any moment. Fortunately, more than one skirmish had take place today so the camp was busy with injured.

His man Armstrong stepped out of Dev’s tent before he reached it. Armstrong always did this, heard him coming and was there waiting for him.

“Help me get him inside,” Dev said, glad of help.

“It’s Master Jack,” Armstrong said in obvious surprise.

“Yes.”

Armstrong didn’t say another word just helped carry the unconscious man into their tent. Then he looked at Dev, asking without words what he thought he was doing.

“I will turn him in but first I need to see if at least one of his arms can be saved.”

Armstrong gazed at wounded man, obviously thinking. “The surgeons won’t think twice about cutting them both off for sure. But I heard about one of the nurses. They say she better than the doctors. Miss Faith Cathwell.”

“A nurse? A woman nurse? Better than the doctors?”

“They say her patients mostly live. Not all but enough where some notice the difference.”

“And you know this because?”

Armstrong looked him in the eye. “You know why, sir.”

You found out in case I’m wounded. Dev gripped his servant’s shoulder. “How can I find Miss Cathwell?”

“She tall with blond hair. And if what I heard is true, she’ll be in the thick of things near the camp hospital.”

Dev nodded, turned to go and then glanced over his shoulder. “Check his pockets in case he still has weapons on him. Keep him here.”

*************

So the Dev goes in search of Faith Cathwell and his life will never be the same. What do you think of him as hero material? Does he act like one?

Have you read either HONOR or BLESSING? If you haven’t signed up for my enewsletter (see box on top right), you should. I’ll be resending Friday’s issue this week and you can find out how to enter a drawing for a copy of FAITH.–Lyn

FAITH, Book 3 of Quaker Brides Debuts Today!

booksbylyncote.com Posted on April 1, 2016 by Lyn CoteApril 1, 2016

FAITH

Today the final book in my Quaker Brides series, FAITH, is available to purchsse. (The left column will connect you to Amazon and Barnes and Noble sites, but it’s also available on all other etailers and in bookstores.) I’m so happy to have been given the opportunity to write a series so close to my heart.

Here’s what Marta Perry had to say about it:

Author Lyn Cote hits a new high in FAITH, the third book in her Quaker Brides series. FAITH is the beautifully-told story of a brave and dedicated Union Army nurse who cares for the victims of a terrible war while searching for a childhood friend who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Cote’s meticulous attention to historical detail never intrudes on the love story of Faith and Dev Knight, the slaveholding Union officer whose personal conflicts become very real. A particularly touching scene shows Faith sharing her Quaker beliefs with him, putting the eternal struggle of faith in a time of war in poignant terms. Any reader who watched the PBS series Mercy Street will be enthralled by this book.

Marta Perry, author of the Pleasant Valley and Keepers of the Promise Amish series

Thanks, Marta.

Romantic Times also reviewed it:

RT Review of FAITH

4 Stars! The Quaker Brides trilogy comes to an end with the story of Honor’s daughter and Blessing’s sister, who is wise beyond her years and devoted to God in a way that affects everyone she encounters. Readers will find themselves wanting the series to continue, as these three steadfast and brave heroines are both believable and admirable, and their historical situations treated with realistic detail.

If you missed it, I posted the Prologue a few weeks agao, Here’s the link http://booksbylyncote.com/SWBS/new-book-release/the-beginning-of…er-brides-series ?.

Author Susan Page Davis and Son Join to Write Seafaring Women of the Vera B

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 28, 2016 by Lyn CoteMarch 28, 2016

Susan Page Davis

My guest today is author Susan Page Davis, who has guested before and whose books I’ve enjoyed and reviewed. She has authored a new book with her son. She is offering one copy to a commenter, e-copy or if print (US ONLY). Here’s Susan:

Strong out of Necessity

Alice Packard has always depended on men and been taken care of by them. Yet she has developed her own strengths and skills. It’s 1854, not an easy time. Her husband is the captain of a merchant brig. He was at sea when she lost a baby. After that, she sails with him, and while on the ship, she learns navigation and thrives in the harsh shipboard life.

But when her husband dies

in Port Phillip Bay, Australia, she needs to dig deep into her inner resources. She has to learn to defend herself, as well as earn her own living, instruct a dozen people in a new occupation, and look after the personal and spiritual needs of her crew.

Alice has moments

where she second-guesses her decisions. Was she wrong to promise a group of downtrodden young women a better life if they would help sail her ship? She delegates to others out of necessity, choosing a first and second mate to oversee the watches and assigning many tasks to the boatswain. But the ultimate responsibility for the voyage and her employees’ lives falls on her, and she feels that weight on her shoulders.

Alice is not very strong physically, but inside she’s rock solid. With others depending on her, she learns to lead. Read her story in The Seafaring Women of the Vera B.–SUSAN

Seafaring Women of the Vera B

Blurb

1854–With the captain dead in Melbourne, Australia, Alice Packard thinks the worst has happened, until she learns the crew has deserted her husband’s ship in favor of the goldfields. Only one old man, Gypsy Deak, sticks by her, but Gypsy alone can’t raise a crew from the depleted population.

In desperation, Alice turns to the only source of plentiful workers: the women of Melbourne. In a bold move, she and Gypsy empty a brothel, promising the escaped women a new life. Her all-woman (save one) crew put their backs and hearts into the voyage, but Alice finds training her sailors much harder than she expected.

Her faith is tested to the limit. With a cargo to sell, angry brothel and tavern owners in pursuit, pirates to evade, and a mysterious stowaway, will the seafaring women of the Vera B. survive to tell the tale of this daring adventure?

Lyn Reviews Robin Lee Hatcher’s The Keeper of the Stars

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 21, 2016 by Lyn CoteMarch 20, 2016
Keeper of the Stars

I’m happy to review another really good inspirational romance, The Keeper of the Stars, by a longtime friend, Robin Lee Hatcher. And even though we’ve been in touch for around 20 years, I wouldn’t write a positive review just because of that. Hope this leads you to check this whole series out. I HAVE ONE COPY TO GIVE AWAY SO LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW. (SORRY US ONLY)

Keeper of the Stars (Kings Meadow Romance, #3)Keeper of the Stars by Robin Lee Hatcher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’ve read and reviewed all of the books in this series plus A Promise to Keep which introduced the small mountain town of King’s Meadow. I am sorry to see this wonderful series end. Such great characters with such real struggles and often a parallel story from the past.

Well, I loved the hero in this romance, Trevor Reynolds, a musician who’s lived on the road for years but never made it big. After a life-altering event, a fatal auto accident, he has reevaluated everything. He comes to his friend’s funeral and is attacked by the friend’s sister, Penny Cartwright, the local librarian.

Robin Lee Hatcher knows how to make the differences between people real and compelling. Penny has a lot of preconceptions of how her brother should have spent his short adult life. And as usual, we humans don’t see the eternal plan–just what we want. That’s Penny’s blind spot.

I once told my mother –“All of us have blindspots. Things about ourselves we can’t see but are sometimes painfully obvious to everyone else.”

Penny bravely begins to see her blindspot and in doing so, she becomes prepared to love and be loved.

I loved her father’s kind leadership and good heart too.

If you haven’t read the King’s Meadow Romance series, why not?

I received this book from the author and have written an honest review.

British Mystery Author Veronica Heley Shares GINGER BOTERKOEK

booksbylyncote.com Posted on March 14, 2016 by Lyn CoteMarch 14, 2016

Veronica Heley

My guest today is British Mystery Author Veronica Heley who visits me at least once a year. I love her kind of book! And today she’s going to share her favorite recipe WHICH I ABSOLUTELY will try out. YUMMY-SOUNDING. Her publisher, Severn House, will be delighted to send a digital copy to one commenter as a giveaway. So be sure to look for the QUESTION below and leave a comment. Here’s Veronica:

My latest book is False Wall, which is the 10th of the Bea Abbot stories.

A favourite recipe of mine was collected when I was in Sweden many years ago. It is quick and easy to make but be warned – the ‘cake’ is as dense and rich as fudge.

GINGER  BOTERKOEK.  (Buttercake)

7 oz good butter                       7 oz caster sugar

9 oz plain flour (sieved)             3 oz ginger, chopped

Pinch of salt                              1 egg, beaten (reserve a little for glazing)

Knead all ingredients together to form a smooth dough. Press into a 8” cake tin, glaze with beaten egg and mark with the back of a fork in criss-cross fashion.

Cook 40-45 minutes at 350 degrees.

While still hot, press down the centre with clean oven cloth to keep the top flat.”–Veronica

Now I’d never heard of caster sugar Here’s a link to see how to make it. Or you can just go and buy it in the store. Who knew?

False Wall

To purchase, click here.

False Wall – Blurb

When the party wall dividing the gardens of Bea Abbot and her fiancé Leon collapses, a human skeleton is unearthed in Leon’s garden. Having only just purchased the property, Leon and Bea set out to discover more about the house’s previous owners. Before they can proceed in their investigation, however, the pair fall victim to an elaborately-laid trap. With her home, livelihood and the agency under threat, it seems Bea is the subject of a meticulously-planned vendetta. But why? And why is Leon becoming so strangely distant?

I’m so happy Veronica visited again this year. I think it’s interesting that she found a favorite recipe while on vacation.QUESTION: Has that ever happened to you? Or have you ever found a new food while on vacation? Don’t forget to leave a comment to be entered into a drawing for an ebook of FALSE WALL.

Author Dana R Lynn and Interrupted Lullaby

booksbylyncote.com Posted on February 29, 2016 by Lyn CoteFebruary 29, 2016

Dana R Lynn

AUTHOR DANA R LYNN and INTERRUPTED LULLABY

My guest today is author Dana R Lynn who has just penned another great Loee Inspired Suspense, Interrupted Lullaby. Dana is also offering a signed copy of her latest book (US ONLY). Don’t miss the question below. Here’s Dana:

Hi Lyn! Thank you so much for having me on your blog today! I am honored to be here and talk about one of my family’s favorite recipes, lasagna. It’s fairly simple to put together, and it doubles well, so when I am on deadline, it makes for a quick dinner. And it’s very filling.

I love being able to provide for my family. Although, sometimes, it’s a little tricky. We have very busy lives, as many people do. I have three kids, ages 16, 15 and 12, and all of them have separate activities. My husband has a very demanding job, one that often requires us to be creative in our scheduling. I, too, work full time as an Educational Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. And, then, of course, I have to find the time to write. Sometimes it’s a struggle, but I love it.

And it makes me think of my heroine, Maggie Slade. She has grit. That’s all there is to it. She is on the run from killers, always having to stay under the radar. Add to that, she has not one baby, but two! Still, with all these difficulties, Maggie is a good mother. When we meet her in chapter one, it is obvious that providing for her children and keeping them safe is her number one priority. Everything else is secondary to them. She’s even willing to risk her life. And, I think, that her strength shines through in that she has kept them safe for a year.

I loved writing Interrupted Lullaby. It was hard to put Maggie and Dan through so much, but in the end it was worth it.

Before I go, I want to share my LASAGNA RECIPE with you.

1 lb. Ground beef or sausage, cooked and drained

1 pint ricotta cheese

1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

2 cups mozzarella cheese

Oven-ready noodles (12)

2 eggs

28 oz of spaghetti sauce

1 tsp Italian seasoning

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Mix ricotta, 1 cup of mozzarella,  1/4 cup of Parmesan, eggs and spice together.

Mix sauce and meat. Put 1/3 of the sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 pan.  Top . With 4 noodles.  Top with half of cheeses mixture. Repeat process. Cover cheese with last 4 noodles. Cover with remaining sauce and then sprinkle with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Cover with double layer of aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.  Yummy.–Dana

The Beginning of Faith Book 3 of my Quaker Brides Series

booksbylyncote.com Posted on February 24, 2016 by Lyn CoteFebruary 20, 2016

FAITH

Cincinnati, Ohio

July 1858

The sound of something shattering woke Faith. She sprang from the bed in Mrs. Henry’s bedroom. Scant moonlight defined the shapes of furniture. “Shiloh!” she called as she hurried toward the hall. “Is thee all right?”

Faith flung open her door. Stepped into the narrow passage between the two upstairs bedrooms. “Shiloh–”

A hand clamped over her mouth. From behind an arm encircled her waist. Tight.

Faith struggled, kicking backward. In vain. She could not break free from the strong arms that kept her silent and trapped.

Close to her ear a harsh low voice whispered in the blackness. “You got the other one ready?”

“Yeah. Now we’ll take care of this one.”

Faith struggled harder. Take care of this one. Dear God, help.

A cloth dosed with something sickly sweet was pressed to her nose. She tried to turn away but the man behind kept her pinned her to him. Dear God, help us. Help Shiloh…

Faith felt herself losing consciousness. She fought it but she felt her limbs losing their strength. Dear God…

So that’s the beginning of my next book, Faith, coming April 1st. Do you want to read more?–Lyn

Author Patricia Johns & Trusting the Wrong Man

booksbylyncote.com Posted on February 22, 2016 by Lyn CoteFebruary 17, 2016

Patricia Johns

My guest today is author Patricia Johns and she has an interesting situation–a heroine who trusted the wrong man. And she’s offering one copy (US or Canada) of her latest book. Leave a comment to be entered into the drawing. Here’s Patricia:

Malory Smythe has made a mistake.

She trusted the wrong man, and I think that’s something a lot of us can relate to! She thought that the man she was with would marry her, but then he ran off with her best friend leaving her alone and pregnant. Malory could sit down and bemoan the unfairness of it all, but she’s made of tougher stuff than that. Instead, she is doing what she must—working her next nanny position so that she can keep her health insurance.

Malory has determined to change a few things in her life:

  1. She is going to raise this child differently than she was raised. Her mother was also a single mom, but she was always looking for a man to complete her, and that was hard on Malory growing up. She needed her mother’s strength, not a string of boyfriends.
  2. She isn’t going to waste any more time on a man who isn’t going to be “the one.”

New Man in her life

When she meets her new boss, sheriff Mike Cruise, his strength and gentleness make her wish that she could rely on him, but she knows better than to follow her wishes instead of her brain. Her baby deserves a strong, dependable mother, and she’s determined to be just that.

True Strength?

Malory is strong, and through this book, she struggles with what true strength looks like. Does True Strength soldier on alone, or does it find someone to share the burden? Does it flex? Does it bend? Or is that just giving in to old habits? She knows she wants something different than the model she was raised with, but how does she go about getting that?”–Patricia

Safe in the Lawman’s Arms

By Patricia Johns

Montana sheriff Mike Cruise never pictured himself as a father. But with temporary custody of a toddler, he has to learn the ropes fast. Thankfully, his sweet nanny, Malory Smythe, fits right in, and Mike begins to believe he can make this family thing work. Although he knows it can’t last forever…

After her cheating ex left her pregnant and alone, Malory could easily fall for a strong, protective man. But she can’t risk repeating past mistakes with men, especially with a child on the way. When their makeshift family is threatened, will it drive Malory and Mike apart… or will it bring them together for good?

Thanks for sharing that, Patricia. I think many of make mistakes of trusting the wrong person though often without such life-changing consequences.

A Short Sweet Romance for My Readers For Valentine’s Day

woman walking dog in winter

Valentine’s Day with a Twist

by Lyn Cote

Sandy walked down the windblown road, letting her dog big mutt Mulligan pull her along. The blustery February wind matched her mood. This would be her second Valentine’s Day since she’d lost Jim. After years of marriage, they had almost stopped celebrating Valentine’s Day except for Jim’s cheery Valentine’s Day Good Morning! which had always included a mention of how much he loved her.

She blinked back tears, not wanting to give in to self-pity and get only chapped cheeks in return.

But then Mulligan began tugging at the leash yanking her off the road into the wooded area. She strained to prevent him but he was stronger and pulled her along. Then she spotted it, a jogging shoe protruding from behind a tree trunk. “Oh, my!” Then she was hurrying right beside Mulligan.

A man with silver hair lay on the jogging path, unconscious. Sandy whipped out her phone as Mulligan whined and sniffed around the man. A quick few words to 911 and help was on its way.

Mulligan was licking the man’s face.

A moan sounded. “What happened?” a gruff voice asked.

“You must have fallen,” Sandy said, moving to hover over him. “I’ve called 911–”

“You didn’t have to do that–”

“I certainly did,” Sandy snapped. “You were unconscious. You might have a concussion. Or have suffered a heart attack. How did I know?”

The man’s eyes widened and then his expression lifted, almost into a grin. “Well…you’re right of course.”  He looked around. “I think I tripped.”

Sandy motioned toward a protruding tree root from an ancient oak tree by the path.

“That would do it all right. My ankle.” He gestured toward it. “I might have twisted it. And by the way I’m Hal.” He offered his hand

She shook his cold hand and introduced herself only as Sandy. The sound of a siren sounded in the distance.

“I feel like a fool,” he said, lifting himself to rest on his elbows.

“Men,” Sandy said good naturedly as she stepped away so she could be seen from the road. “Even a super hero can trip.”

The man grinned.  “And how many superheroes have you come to help?”

Sandy chuckled at this.

The EMT’s hurried up and swarmed around them. They determined that Hal had an injured ankle and needed an X-Ray to rule out a break and a doctor should make a call about a concussion. Soon he was being slid into the back of the ambulance.

“Wait!” Hal called out. “What’s your last name? I want to be able to thank you properly!”

“There’s no need,” Sandy called back from the curb.

“It’s too cold and I might have a broken ankle, I can’t hang around and wait for you to walk your dog by here again.”

Sandy drew in breath at the way Hal was looking at her. “My last name’s Warner. You’ll find me under my late husband’s name Jim.”

“Got it ! Jim Warner!”

The door was shut and the ambulance took off with the whine of its siren. Mulligan whoofed after it. Sandy couldn’t move, the thrill of having a man ask for her full name freezing her in place. Mulligan dragged her into starting their walk again.

Had Hal just been being polite? Only time would tell. But she couldn’t stop herself from grinning.
